I stopped mentioning to people about using alt text for their images a long time ago now.
There are so many helps and reminders built into the interface of mastodon that you nearly need to be maliciously lazy or very dim not to be aware of the feature. so I:
- right click copy image
- middle click paste
- spend a few seconds typing
- then I click post on your image
And now it's mine! MoooHaaHAA!!!

How to wash a cat
Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.
Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.
In one smooth movement put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. You may need to stand on the lid.
At this point the cat will self-agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this!
Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a 'Power Wash' and 'Rinse'.
Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the toilet and the front door.
Stand well back, behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift the lid.
The cat will rocket out of the lid, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.
Both the toilet and the cat will be sparkling clean.

I wrote my little script, b/c I was *wasting* all the beautiful fotos I kept downloading from fedi - they were just festering in a dir on my hd and rarely seen. Now they are in rotation every hour of every day and I get to enjoy them.
Sometimes I am so taken with them again that I want to share my happiness and I post the full desktop - that's why I render the file name with the artist's credit into the image.
Fedi has gifted me with such amazing stuff!
The current one is always here https://gemlog.gemlog.ca/wxpaper.png for when I'm logged in from out of town and want to feel at home. I've told nginx to nocache, but... you may need to force a refresh each hour.
If I know the artist, the credit is always in the file name in the lower right. In this case it's Deb Beausoleil, who is also a fedizen on here.

Yes, that was the first of his quotes I gave and I fully agree. It's the only way to limit the damage of capitalism on people and the environment.
No, I was stopped up short by the last thing I quoted him as saying:
"Prof. Joel Bakan described a “new” corporation ideology, which holds that corporations should take the lead on social and environmental issues and that they can regulate themselves."
Perhaps he was quoting someone else and I misapprehended that pull quote in the article?
Of course, there are many hundreds of examples why this is proven to be a stupid idea. Most recently we have the examples of:
- Thames water, siphoning out money as dividends, not reinvesting in infrastructure, so that now there are both water failures all over the place (more than any other water company [1]) along with pumping at least 72bn litres of raw sewage into the Thames only since 2020 [2]. On top of this, the Thatcher-era near gift of endless profits has been squandered to the extent that they must now come around to the government hat in hand begging money as they can't even afford the fines levied against them for their poor performance [1]. The lack of regulation and oversight has resulted in a broken system and near bankruptcy as the capitalist have over-fed from the commons for decades [3].
Thames Water is also the poster boy for the argument against privatization.
I chose Thames Water, because it's near you, but many recent examples of similar debacles easily come to mind.
The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) in California, USA also neglected its infrastructure and caused massive wild fires [4]. After killing at least 90 people [5] they too finally ended up in bankruptcy [6] leaving a legacy of crumbling natural gas and electrical infrastructure.
You know I could easily go on and on with other example like the Tar Sands in Canada or bauxite in Jamaica or...
But I'll close with Boeing. The USA decided that Boeing could oversee their own safety using their own engineers. You know the result: the loss of two aircraft and many hundreds dead, because they lied about the nature of the 747 MAX (it is NOT the same aircraft as it's 747 predecessors!). The MCAS system [7] was designed to cover up this lie. Of course, the hidden flaws don't end there! More recently a door blew out mid-air! But I'm tired of making footnotes. It's first thing in the morning for me. Just gone 04h30 in fact.
I can not even begin to imagine what magical recipes are contained in your book that might render capitalist corporations even benign vs their usual rapacious selves - never mind beneficial.
You did clobber me over the head with the fact that you're a prof and I'm, well, I'm a man with barely 8 years of primary education before setting off to work, but surely I can be made to understand the broad strokes of your solutions?

Frozen fruit and berries were in 600 gram bags. Now they are 400 grams, but the bags look the same. And the Weasels *also* raised the price 2 dollars and the shops have the nerve to call it a sale when it's *only* 1 dollar more and for the 1/3 smaller size!
Fine. I won't buy them any longer.
I will redouble my efforts to freeze plums, cherries and blackberries from the yard in season. I will buy clearance citrus and grapes and freeze them myself. They can pound sand up you know where.
Ditto for mushrooms. I normally just freeze a few Pines (matsutake) and eat the others I forage, but now I'm going to freeze morels, chanterelles and sweet tooths as well. King boletes even grow right in my yard.
More foraging. More leaning on friends hunting (I butcher). I'm nearly meatless anyhow.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the 'Log in with Google' pop ups in firefox?
The default advice is to (cough) log into your google account and change a setting. Right. I don't have a damn google account and I'm not getting one just to turn off google?
I tried an addon 'stricly block popups' or similar name, but it was horribly broken - it also began by white-listing every site I hate - including google, bing, facebook, twit and others! Anyhow, even with those out of the way it was buggy junk.
There must be one that works without nuking everything (I log into jitsi with github - no other way except fb or goog).
Anyone?

The real question is why the heck do we need growth and reach anyhow - we aren't a profit-seeking capitalist entity that requires endless growth for no reason as quickly as possible.
It will reach and grow without help, just more slowly. The idea of fedi was around a long time before mastodon and even activitypub - I was excited about it ~2006.
I already read my maximum number of follows and I've been maxed out for years. I'm happy to see govts and media with their own instances and that will only grow.
The only reason for Threads federating is to reach into our instances a devour our privacy - they aren't federating to be our special friend. But maybe some people like that, IDK. It's a personal choice and I've blocked the domain.
Besides, I have no interest in joining with over a billion people I do not know, while I have a tough time keeping up with the 60-70 people I do know. Plus the people they boost etc etc

@npub1trd…ussx Yes, it's right on the water and backed up to mountains. I imagine it jockeys for position slightly, but Vancouver is about the most expensive town for housing in North America https://www.propertyshark.com/Real-Estate-Reports/2014/05/20/north-america-most-expensive-cities/
Aukland rents are about a third lower according to https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Canada&city1=Vancouver&country2=New+Zealand&city2=Auckland and all else over 10% less expensive.

How to steal public services the old fashioned way...
I saw a great little poster early this morning from @npub1pcg…9h92 ,so I boosted it, but the people I know in real life (like my friend and boss) can't read french. Also, I'm really tired of trying to get across how this works with him! I don't need to convince people like you lot who either do read french and/or know how this works already. Really, I loved the imagery of the dominoes, because the steps taken are always the same in my experience, both where I have lived and looking out at the world. Here are the original and then my effort. I did vary the text a bit in english, even between when I made my notes and when I made (ahem) plagiarized the graphic.

@npub1te6…zc4l I discovered one late last winter. Super easy, but not flakey. So easy you could just risk it once to know if you liked it. I made a whole bunch of deer stew pies :-) I normally can't be arsed to make pastry, but it was so fast. And these were both crusts, top and bottom. I did pre-bake the bottoms though, because I'm a whimp and didn't want to risk making bad pies... Lard or bacon grease (I used the latter) and buttermilk. Awesome!
