Last year, Big Tech companies ( #Alphabet ( #Google ) , #Amazon , #Apple , #Meta, and #Microsoft) received about $3.04 billion in fines for breaking laws on both sides of the Atlantic. As of seven days and three hours into 2024, they had already earned enough revenue to pay it all off.
A little over a week of operations is all it would take if the companies tackled their fines one after another. If they each paid their fines simultaneously, Meta would be the last to finish after five days and 13 hours.
This shows how insignificant these fines are for companies whose revenues are often larger than countries’ GDPs. In fact, 2023 was the second straight year these five companies were fined over $3 billion(new window), showing that they view fines as nothing more than the cost of doing business.

When reading headlines like these:
"Earth close to ‘risk tipping points’ that will damage our ability to deal with climate crisis, warns UN
Analysis also warns of further tipping points on horizon such as drying up of groundwater vital for food supplies"
It is clear that a collapse is not just a '#doomer' scenario, but a real threat. #Acceptance of that fact is step 1 towards a sane way of dealing with the situation. The next step would be to adopt another mindset. A very profound #Mindshift is needed.
Why it is unlikely that we can avoid a collapse of both the ecological system and western civilisation is the main topic of my book, but in the last part of it I focus mostly on the things that we *can* do that will soften our #crashlanding.

I guess vapes are just another excellent example of "Business-as-Usual":
Develop a new product to keep people addicted to habits that are both bad for themselves and for the planet.
They really serve no other purpose whatsoever than ripping people of and sustaining a consumerist culture.

What if we just decide to stop buying useless crap?
Stop buying and using gadgets we don't need?
Stop buying low quality things.
Stop buying and using plastic junk.
Really, we won't miss anything. We gain a lot, less stuff in our lives, a cleaner planet, more money in your purse, consequently less work, more free-time.
What a relief!

💯 I can very much relate to this. During all the research and writing of my book, I often felt the need to talk about all the shit that's happening and the amazing info I found, but no, it's kinda taboo.

2. REDIRECT RESPONSIBILITY : Someone else should take action first.
