#BirdCallOut #Lifer Green-tailed Towhee! In my tiny backyard at the bird bath!
My wife and I were just admiring a pair of Abert's Towhees, semi-frequent backyard visitors that we hadn't seen in a few weeks. I was commenting on how they prefer to drink out of the planter's reservoir, rather than go up to the birdbath, when suddenly a similarly-sized bird we'd never seen before arrived at the birdbath for a drink. It was so cool looking with it's brilliant white throat patch!

In-laws visited this weekend, including some niblings. We played Sushi Go Deluxe, Slide 5, Cartographers, Ticket to Ride Europe, and Uno Flip. We finished the weekend with some Sibley's Bird Bingo to unwind. Didn't get around to Quacks of Quedlinburg, so I owe my wife a game of that tomorrow, once we're recovered from hosting 6 guests.

@npub1sp5…nxdw This looks a lot more like an adult male Calliope hummingbird to me than a Costa's. The gorget is a stripy magenta, not solid purple.
Edit: I also meant to say, this is a gorgeous picture!

Very satisfying #soup for lunch today. Random mix of split peas, mushrooms, kombu, carrots, onions, and celery with some skinny cylinder pasta I don't know the name for. All added to homemade stock.
Had to eat some because the current freezer bag of random vegetable trimmings and meat bones is getting pretty full. I see another batch of soup stock appearing soon in my future.

Tonight we were introduced to a new game, Cartographers. The website says it's for fans of Tetris and adult coloring books, and I've got to say that's completely true. I enjoyed coloring in my grid and fitting in my shapes, all while watching the march of time through the seasons in my fantasy kingdom. It might be considered a roll & write, but there's no rolling, only card flipping. It was a lot of fun and seems quite replayable.

The journey to more plants and less meat continued today with a broccoli-lentil quiche. A lot of randomness went into it. I had no milk or cream, so I used my homemade yogurt. The cheddar I thought we had was gone, so I used manchego. It came out all right, though of course the most delicious part is the crust, as always.

A few days ago, I finally remembered while in the pantry to take out my sprouting seeds and jar. Today the alfalfa and clover sprouts are ready to eat! I'll be adding them as an accent on top of a red lentil curry that I'm excited to try out. Sprouting seeds at home is a really nice way to expand your plant variety, no matter what the weather outside.

For tonight's guacamole, I cut fresh cilantro from the planter in the backyard. The leaves were so sturdy, and the stems were so crisp! They gave such a satisfying sound as I diced them up. Such a difference from the wilting ones from the store. I'm glad I motivated myself to get the seeds into the ground after the frosts were over.
Shout out to my local #library for the seeds! Libraries are awesome, and they are so much more than books.

For this loaf of challah, I experiment with swapping in rye for a quarter of the flour. I'll find out how it tastes at brunch tomorrow.
I grew up doing a 3-strand braid for long, narrow challah, but I quite like the circular look of my 4-strand braid here.

Any recommendations for good SFF/speculative books that are written first person? My wife and I are really enjoying reading the Murderbot books aloud to each other. Part of that is the great writing and sparkling personality of the main character, but I think part of it is also the different vibe of first person writing, where the narrator is telling a story to the audience. I'd like to find more books like that.

@npub1uw8…88kr We have solar panels, but no way to store the excess (it gets fed back into the grid). We try to run our major appliances during the daylight when we can. We switched to being a single-car household with a plug-in hybrid for now.
