I'm up in sunny Heretaunga, just on the edge of town near orchards, its lovely. In my day job i'm a networking engineer I think. When not working I cook, try to produce more of our food in a wee garden, very slowly build a sailing dinghy and spend too much time on 'puter games.

@nprofile…jc9n @nprofile…azpw @nprofile…6t6n I don't mean any offense to you, but I find that thought about what is "interest" and thus "news" to be utterly depressing. And if any sneeze or fart any formerly public person might subsequently do in public can be published just because lots of people will spend time reading it to me that says a lot about how much we collectively have ruined things.

@nprofile…gyq6 @nprofile…azpw @nprofile…6t6n I get that perspective, but essentially that boils news down purely to anything someone will spend time consuming. And then the next step from there is valuing news purely for how many and how long people consume it. I know its too much to ask for given the commercial reality but I wish news was the important or useful things people should know about than trash like these stories. We already have enough gossip, click-bait & outrage bait.

I think once you're out of the public eye then reporting on rumours of minor misdeeds you may, or may not, have done is no longer of public interest and is really just gossip. I could concede that if someone is charged then maybe it would be elevated above gossip, but the story that circulated yesterday hadn't got to that level.

@npub16uk…pv7k Its not just a public sector problem.
Outside consultants will come in and assess needs then recommend the product every other business is moving to (I like to think of this as fad-consulting). And promise that it does what is required with only minimal customisation.
Then consultants come in to run the build & migration and only then is it discovered it does 80% of what is needed with minimal customisation but the other 20% is fundamentally impossible without 100s of hours.

@npub16uk…pv7k $10 it was the property (and underground asset) mapping that was the bit that screwed them up ;)
Also, I just knew I was going to read out of the box, minimal changes in what they were planning.

@npub16uk…pv7k Its almost like they don't realise that outsourcing your design, build and operation doesn't mean you don't have an IT function in your organisation, it just means you're paying somebody else to do it. And you might be paying way more than it could cost you, with far less oversight.

@npub16uk…pv7k Sometimes it seems to come down to a happiness to spend 10x in capitalised cost during implementation, heaps of which goes to consulting firms, on something that might last 5 years before replacement.
Few businesses seem to think about doing things themselves and considering it cost of operation by employing people to do it.
Then even after the initial capital outlay they still dont have the personnel so keep going back to the consultants at exorbitant prices time after time.

@npub1zg9…nh26 if you already have the monitor etc, upgrading from 2018 to M2 Mac Mini would be a noticeable bump I reckon. It might depend a bit on the software you use but most will be native for the am series or perform surprisingly well via Rosetta.
