It's too bad so many Dems were cowards (or collaborateurs) when it came to balking at bringing back the New Deal programs we need. I'd like to see burn scars replanted with native plants appropriate to the ecosystem there.
One problem in CA is how many introduced plants we have that pop up before the natives get a start. And they die quickly, providing plenty of tinder.
I'd like to see more native grass communities brought back. It is labor intensive, but paid well those could be jobs.

Yup. There are so many good things trees can do and unfortunately we are now fucked for having them near homes in fire-prone areas.
I do think an interdisciplinary project on this would be helpful. Need to look at research and find the sweet spot as far as how far away it needs to be but how close it can still be.
I had an extraordinary experience with a research field of black poplars here. Even standing near by was like standing in air conditioning. It was jaw-dropping.

One of the many Catch 22s of those in power having kicked the can down the road regarding climate change is that if you don't have trees near your home, you get hotter, but if you do have trees near your home, it's a greater fire risk.
I think we need to get horticulturalists, landscape architects and fire experts together. I think we probably need large shade sails near homes, and then have the larger shrubs and trees out beyond the defensible space. #Horticulture #ClimateChange

Yup. And that extends to how at least in the US many gov'ts collect registration fees for bikes, but if the bike gets stolen, you will not likely get help with recovery despite the fact that that's what they say the fee funds.
So sustainable transportation isn't supported the way a much less sustainable form continues to be prioritized and subsidized.

🧵 2nd time in a week I've asked an abled person (no disabled licence or placard) to move from a disabled parking space and been faced with belligerence instead.
Guy was sitting in the driver's seat playing on his phone. His first response was, "If a disabled person comes, I'll move". I had just parked in another spot because he was there, but I didn't want to say that because, as I told him, "That's not how the law works".
He sat there silently daring me to do anything.

I hate when media does inspiration porn stories in general, but particularly when:
- They let a newly disabled person with tons of internalized ableism become "the voice of disabled people"
and

I just wondered how effective Hot Ones could be were it applied to politicians.
While it's known for its deeper unusual questions, what also works about the premise is that it breaks people who are very used to doing press out of their mannerisms.
They're usually in such distress over the capsaicin pain that it breaks them out of their smooth operation. If the public needs that from anyone, it's politicians.

Activism is required.
You cannot escape climate change by going off-grid and creating a permaculture ecovillage - climate change will catch up with you & yours.
Not saying there might not be other good reasons to form intentional communities, but you cannot ethically escape the requirement to be an activist.
The greedhead fascists who brought us anthropogenic climate change won't stop continuing their violence voluntarily. They must be met with active and constant resistance and outflanking.

Just saw someone recommending cycling/urbanism accounts to follow and every one was a white (presumably abled) dude, with the exception of a podcast that has a white woman.
I know we're somewhat limited in recommendations by who joined Mastodon & participates here, but try to recommend more diverse follows. The most famous accts are not necessarily the ones doing the work. I've seen some scrape & re-brand the work of white women & BIPOC without credit.
Switch it up.

Something I've read of being a successful tactic in several primary sources from the '30s - '40s is using bureaucracy as much against a fascist state as they're trying to use it against you.
One of the traits that I feel helped get us where we are now is that people cede power far too easily. They despair or get cynical and just never try.
Bureaucratically drag your feet every chance you get to thwart shitty stuff. Not all resistance is the obvious stuff.

Are there places in the Fediverse where folks who are longtime disabled (i.e. having done some of the work of dismantling their internalized ableism) and are into pan-disability activism are hanging out exchanging ideas and tactics?
Most of what I see is discussion within silos of one's own disability group (ME, blindness, autism, etc.) or COVID discussion [all of which is great, but I'm looking for more pan-disability stuff to supplement].

Accessibility tip:
If you don't use a screenreader to access the internet, you may be unaware that case matters in hashtags. Sadly, Mastodon tends to lower case them even when you're trying to camel case them.
If you lower case a multiword hashtag, the screenreader reads it like it's one word - making gibberish out of it. If you camel case it (capitalize the start of each word even though you're not spacing between words), the screenreader can differentiate the words.

My entire adult life, the messaging from most politicians, echoed by media, has been urging austerity. Even when reporting surpluses.
Meanwhile the rich get astronomically richer, aren't taxed enough (or sometimes at all), are not made to pay back what they've stolen, etc.
It's remarkable how effective the messaging is in getting us to fight over crumbs instead of taking the resources meant for everyone away from the few greedy people who are hoarding them.
