And indeed, I can also run my own Mastadon server - but even I dont do that I pay someone to do it.
It's just not a viable answer for someone who uses Slack day to day.
Until we find ways to deal with these super hard to solve problems, these suggestions are largely not useful. Many of us have tried corporate IRC servers and lol, how bad does that go.

And largely also why many of the federated services fail or dont succeed in the wider sense - its impossible to know who to trust. Even a enormous comunity of some of the most paranoid crazies on the planet (us) didnt see the Freenode thing coming

Point is, you have valid points about IRC and I agree a lot - but the big missing “*" is if you are able to pick a good and well run and well intentioned server or network.
Much the same concerns as here etc.

need to find an app that does SMS properly. My WhatsApp is on UK number and some banking stuff too.
So need to know what SMS integration AA does and what apps support that properly etc this is the main annoyance. I never take calls coming on that number

no a voip app is fine - currently on o2 eSIM and they make changing phones while abroad very hard
So looking for pure VoIP options that terminates to app on phone and gives close to phone experience.
Support won’t recommend or suggest apps just link to wiki. Like who has time to test it all?

Still looking for a solid option to port my UK O2 number to a useable VOIP provider that does sms termination also
I spoke with aa.net.uk and their support/presales just didn’t bode well
Paying O2 monthly is fine but changing phones is horrible as they are just idiots when it comes to swapping the esims
