The news is such a gut punch. The Ukraine policy shift is devastating. As someone who has worked in Soviet Moscow, spent time in Ukraine and the Baltics, volunteered with refusniks, as a son of a WWII veteran, immigrants, I find myself crushed that this is happening. The most reliable way to stop the spread is washing your hands with soap & water for at least 20 seconds.
Hand sanitizer is not very effective against norovirus. While many viruses are contained in “envelopes” that are made of fat & can be broken by alcohol-based sanitizers, norovirus is contained in a hardy protein shell called a capsid. I teach separate courses in #SwiftUI and #CircuitPython on microcontrollers (Adafruit CircuitPlayground Bluefruit & Raspberry Pi Pico W). Engineers often have a broken evaluation mechanism. Uni CS is often “weed out” which overwhelmingly favors those who had a head start in high school. Many take this model to their hiring tasks and assume “best” must be those with today’s knowledge. But a fast learner is often a better choice than the “133t tricks” assessment winner. You see so many self-taught engineers because uni CS programs repel new talent. So says this tenured professor with > 27 yrs experience. Cast a wider net.

I will. never understand online trolling. I rarely dive into responses, but occasionally when I do, I take screenshots & share with my students re: how not to behave online. Trolls are in three camps: 1) Didn't know they were doing it 2) Knew it, never reflected that being hurtful is bad - seek counseling, 3) Never seek counseling, don't care/continue/enjoy cruelty & their sociopathy will impact coworkers, spouses, children, and them. If we can save 1 & 2, we make a difference. (1/2)

I love #Apple products but I'm surprised #Siri hasn't been refined for better coordination between devices. Oftentimes when I say "Hey Siri" a response battle ensues between my watch, phone, laptop, and speaker. To get the coordination I want, I sometimes have to sneak out of the room and whisper to my watch (I feel like an attorney speaking to a client on trial). Do others see this? @npub159j…kfaf the filter is on an arm so I can slide it out when I don’t need it. I’ll use the light when there is no natural light or not much, and the filter when I’m below 3m but still have decent natural light. I will run tests though since I’m new to this. The light is only 4000 lumens and a 100° cone so it’s likely only useful for up close work. Hopefully I have some good options covered but I’ll be sure to post results.

It took me a while to learn to cook well. Didn’t have a cooking family growing up. Over the years I slowly discovered most of these tips. Good for (esp young) folks who aren’t yet good cooks. One I’d add: have caramelized onions (they store well in the fridge - just heat and they de-congeal). Mac-using hive mind: I find that sometimes my browsers will freeze and I can no longer use either Safari or Chrome. Force quitting and restarting doesn’t seem to solve the problem and nothing lingers in Force Quit after I cancel a stuck app but restarting the app doesn’t correct the prob. Restarting the Mac does. This occurs several times a day. I’m not using tabs excessively (3-8), but I do have Google Docs up in some and a JavaScript heavy text editor from my publisher in another. Any ideas?

I wish there were some easy UI driven resolutions to the common “repository is out of date” when trying to push from #Xcode to GitHub. I find this always trips up new students. Would like a one click “forget what’s in the current repo and commit & push what I have locally” since that’s almost always what they want to do.

I’ve been trying to regain Spanish. Four years high-school and a summer in Spain but 35 yrs ago. Duolingo isn’t very good. Babel better. Memrise also ok, but I really like flash cards in Brainscape. They read aloud - have multi levels of retry, show written answers, and multiple words or phrases for a concept. For me Brainscape is the most useful. #leaen #language

With the addition of Panama I now need another shelf for the Starbucks mugs in Fulton 460c. Students often offer to bring me one but that breaks my rule, which is that I collect one each time I visit a city outside the lower 48 that has a SBUX. Updating a chapter on "Understanding Software" and am stating clearly that LLMs won't make programming go away, instead they will turn most everyone into a programmer. An even more vital skill is the ability to understand code, to be able to effectively follow the logic of and evaluate generated code, and understand if and how generated code will be incorporated into larger systems. Sure, "Software Is Eating the World," but the case of VW trying to become a leader in EV shows how challenging this is. You don't just "drop in code" & get a winning product. The old "auto-mfg as integrator, not developer" approach popularized in earlier decades was disastrous for VW's software effort (different teams, different cloud providers). Are we piloting self driving in the wrong places? Would like to see autonomous vans run on paved over rail tracks. Apps would hail van for stops, otherwise they would run direct to passenger dropoff.
