I've had some fun and interesting connections with folk on here but unfortunately the ubiquitous presence of racist, sexist, exclusionary, and frankly joy draining behaviour (where is the humour? the patter quality is dire lol) makes it increasingly feel like an environment I wouldn't volunteer to spend my time in!

Re last boost, yesterday I stumbled on some subtoots about me, one suggesting my post was a good "test case" for claims of toxicity on the platform, in which the guys in the conversation came to the conclusion that, since they didn't find anything problematic in the thread I'd linked to, that I was just taking the posts personally (even though the subjects of the conversation didn't relate to me personally in any way) 🤡💩

To set aside the exclusionary shit and put my educator's hat on for a minute, the primary thing that makes mastodon complicated for people to get started with is not technical or practical, people know how to fill out forms - it's conceptual. Understanding how to choose an instance requires a significant amount of context, together with a clear sense of the implications of that choice. And we haven't done a great job of providing that context in an accessible way, so far anyway.

Every time I open an app and see the little AI sparkles on a new button, my immediate thought is oh great this is feeding everything I put in here somewhere. These companies are taking a flamethrower to any sense of trust their users had, just incredibly reckless honestly.

Something I think people don't always understand about growing up in poverty is that it isn't just going without things, and the stress of that, it's the level of chaos you end up living in. Never experiencing calm, peaceful conditions has an effect it's difficult to convey.

Re last boost, I actually hesitate to post these days because of how dreadful the replies are. Often white men will advise me to restrict visibility of my posts if I don't want replies. I don't want to be less visible, I want to be able to choose who can interact with me. Maybe have a think about what the fediverse will be like if those of us on the receiving end of the most toxic shit have to hide our posts.

Folk who don't come from privilege and are trying to get into tech: sign up for things you don't know how to do yet.
Privileged folk do this ALL THE TIME and will even be hired for senior jobs with zero relevant experience. Typically their playbook is finding someone junior to them to actually do the job they were hired for.
You can pick things up, for coding work there are typically tons of free online resources, do not opt out of opportunities because it's something you've never done before.

Not linking directly because I don't want to shit on projects I believe are genuinely trying to make the web better, but every time I see a post about "the small web" or a more "humane" web or whatever that includes phrases like this about content: "created without the motivation of financial gain" I sigh so deeply lol
I am begging ethical web enthusiasts to understand what an extreme privilege it is to spend time working on something without worrying about money

I'm being a smartarse about this of course but let's say we actually had the will to fix it, what would that look like?
I'd put my money on a real commitment to shared learning across functions. Everyone should be able to explain their work in ways that are understandable to anyone else in an organisation, and in doing so they would deepen their own understanding of it.
Together they would develop a shared understanding of how each role contributes to the whole.

Culture varies but support for learning those technical skills or even asking questions to develop understanding is also generally extremely low. The people designated technical are the only ones who shall be taken seriously.
The implication is that ideally everyone is a trained software engineer regardless of role lol can you imagine how utterly hopeless a company would be under those conditions.

In the tech industry there is a belief that there are "technical" and "non-technical" roles, and that legitimacy in the non-technical roles is dependent on being technical enough. So all these folk in essential roles are meant to be technical but have chosen the non-technical (and typically therefore lower paying) roles because they have some personal passion for whatever the non-technical role is.
