My mother's side of the family were homesteaders. My grandfather worked in the coal mines, my grandmother raised their children and maintained a 1 acre farm with chickens, a well, etc.
My father's side of the family were dairy farmers. Dogs, cows, pigs, cats, chickens, that sort of thing.
Mysteriously, neither side of my family ever had to kill an, "untrainable" animal.
Then again, neither side of my family were beauty pageant winner governors pretending to be rural country folk/farmers in a state 2x+ the size of Vermont, but with a population well under 1 million, while also not being allowed on native american reservations within that state.
