and yes I know Republicans in my state are messing with it, but it doesn't count as "universal healthcare" or "affordable" when one political party can screw with it so much. Oh and friend with cancer got laid off in 2020. After he burned thru his Cobra he didn't qualify for the ACA since he didn't have a job and didn't qualify for Medicaid because he owed a home. He raised $700/month for an ACA plan thru GoFundMe to pay for chemo.

I hate the ACA. When my husband lost his job in '18 and I went to sign up for a plan, the cheapest one was $2600/month that didn't pay for anything until we met a $14,000 deductible. A plan with copays was $3600/month with a $14k deductible. I had to close my business and go back to work for another company just for affordable health insurance. Still stuck in that trap. It's down to $800/month with $9000 deductible which is still too expensive.

exactly. And small donations do help. Even though i find money in politics nauseating, it's how to reach people in swing states through ads, staff for state offices, etc.

People who are criticizing donating to the Harris campaign because "all politicians are the same" and "political donations are dumb" are starting to annoy me. One reason I made a donation is because if Trump wins again he is going to gut protections for ALL marginalized groups, including establishing a “male/female” gender binary on the federal level. Giving $ to her campaign helps prevent that. Many of us who donated to Harris also help with mutual aid. #Mastodon4Harris

my point is this whole election hangs on what voters in swing states do in November, and polls in those states aren't looking good. I have no idea what people like me in deep red states can do because our actual votes will be irrelevant.

I was so excited about his campaign and volunteered and donated. But in 2018 the high cost of the ACA destroyed my small business. My husband lost his job and our insurance, and the cheapest policy on the ACA was $2600/month with a $14k deductible. I'd been running a freelance book development company and my husband couldn't find a decent job so I had to close and get a job just for affordable health insurance. It took me years to get over the resulting depression.

same. Obama is on video promising the first thing he'd do if elected was protect reproductive rights, then after he won we never heard a peep about it again. I got several fundraising texts the day Roe was overturned and I emailed the people some very rude responses.

excellent post! It seems like the red states are hoping to "solve" the falling birth rate "problem" by banning abortion. More child labor! I kinda wonder if young people will rebel by just not having as much sex.

last month my neighbors directly across the street from the chicken houses saw people in hazmat suits spraying them down, we're assuming for the one time of year the litter is changed 🤮 I'm now mostly a vegan because this experience has been so gross.

the air quality in my rural Tennessee community got a lot worse last year when some guy built a Tyson chicken factory farm on our street. The smell is sometimes awful and the children closest to the houses have developed lots of respiratory issues. The rise of industrial agriculture is also playing a big role in this problem.
