Social web observations:
On both bsky and fedi the decision by the EU to send a warning to X about misinformation and the DSA does not get a whole lot of traction anymore, and does not seem to have entered Discourse. Def used to be different in that people viewed such a thing as a potential migration wave towards either masto or fedi. Seems that people do not have that hope anymore.

It would be great to have something similar for the fediverse as well, but I'm not sure that putting it in Mastodon the server software would be the best approach (not even considering they dont have the capacity for it anyway). Either put it in a client or non-masto-microblogging platform, as that creates competitive advantage for that project

In my latest newsletter I wrote that I think that #activitypub is better suited for longform content. As a practical illustration of this: my wordpress account is followed by some 500 people, and the blogs itself get just as much engagement as the microblog posts where I announce the blog post to 7k followers. I dont even boost my full-length wordpress blog posts from my main 7k followers account because I want to see this effect in action

different cultures can coexist on a federated platform, but for that you need to make sure there are minimal connections between the cultures. This can be done either with a significant number of server blocks (see altright fedi) or speaking a different language (see misskey.io)

Interoperability and federation makes it that culture transcends software borders. Im surprised by the amount of people who say that using other fedi software will fix cultural issues people have with Mastodon; if you think that Mastodon has a Reply Guy problem, it is unclear how using Akkoma instead of Mastodon will decrease the amount of Reply Guys in your mentions.

Uhhhh, so Sam Altman says here in this clip that OpenAI already had GPT4 internally in Nov22, when chatgpt (3.5) got released.
So that means we're now in a solid plateau of LLM capabilities for the last 18 months now. The idea that LLMs will get significantly better is just plain wrong.
OpenAI already tried twice to go to a GPT5, but failed both times with 4turbo and 4o. Just announced they'll try again lol

#Fediverse has no daily active user data, but it does have monthly active user data (1.02m MAU according to fedidb)
#Bluesky has both MAU and DAU: 1.37m MAU and 291k DAU, for a ratio of 4.7
If we apply that ratio to fedi we get a 271k DAU for fedi.

@npub1k08…6xvn im starting to think that this new logo is fairly important. its been clear for a while that there are two different understandings of what the fediverse is, and theres also been an issue with making a clear delineation between them.
maybe the icon is the easiest way: people who use meta's icon for the fediverse are the federation-maximalist part of the fediverse, people who use the colored pentagram are the smallcircles/archipelago part of the fediverse

for context: this is what the advanced web ui for notifications looks on indieweb.social, which is NOT on the nightly build, but regular 4.2.8
then again, i cannot imagine living without a client with grouped notifications because that is hell regardless, so it does not affect me otherwise anyway

just chiming in to point out that part of these notification changes have been around for a while in a custom UI that has been well received so far. Indieweb.social also runs this, for example. so its not like this came out of nowhere because one dev had fun doodling random shit; its actually been tested in other live environments for months

2 weeks ago: fedi in uproar because a bridge between networks was proposed to be opt-out and not opt-in
1 week (and still ongoing): fedi overrun by spam because of the default of open, opt-out, federation with (abandoned) servers
currently: fedi dunking on bluesky because bluesky doesnt default to opt-out federation while they are still working the implementation

this site started recently with really good granular data. for a user to count as active it needs to have made an activity (like/follow/post) in that timeperiod.
accurate monthly active user data should become available in like 3 weeks.
they are currently just below 500k daily active users

the language is hard and confusing in this case.
I deliberately did not say that it is the 'fediverse' fighting with itself, instead opting for Mastodon. The Lemmy community seems to have taken quite a different stance than the Mastodon community, and did not feel part of the Discourse like the Mastodon community did ( see https://lemmy.ml/post/11924981 for example)

Mostly no, its mostly not a thing.
but its actually worse than that, since there are channels for socialising changes; these channels often represent a federation-maximalist view. So thats also how you get this weeks situation, you can nemawashi the changes and mostly get very different answers (with the exception of 1 or 2 people) than from the larger fedi crowd

i think too few people are aware yet that #bluesky is rapidly becoming a japanese social network
as far as I can tell the growth of the network in the last few days (close to 1.5m new accounts, 50% network growth) is highly dominated by japanese accounts
I think the best analogue to understand bluesky is how misskey relates to mastodon

I know that my server has it because crossposting from friendica to bluesky works, its just the getting the bluesky feeds into friendica thats an absolute mystery to me on how to use it
