I know part of the reason Meta's VR boondoggle failed is that VR just isn't "there" yet, but I suspect a lot of it is that people looked at the idea of an entire universe run by Facebook and said "nah, I'm good."

@npub1psd…9sr7 @npub1rhr…gh5p That keynote was a very good summary of where we're at.
I also grew up reading (and loving) this SF, but I think these folks have ruined a lot of these ideas by association. Looking at what they've done with the techno-optimism of the early internet, I can't imagine wanting to put their chip in my brain, or upload my mind to their servers, or live in their space colony.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't swoop in with their own Mastodon client to take another swing at being a player in social media.
