It’s hard to overstate how big David Lynch was for the people we might call “artistic” in the 80s and 90s. There were the movies of course, and Twin Peaks, and there was also a strange comic strip, The Angriest Dog in the World, which turned up in alternative weeklies. The strips always showed the dog furiously straining its tether. Comics used to be trash, but now reading graphic novels is practically an elitist intellectual activity. Many of us consume “Prestige TV” - a concept alien to our parents. VTuber and Twitch content is ignored/dismissed as pop junk today, but you never know how these things will evolve. Maybe we’re 20 years away from college courses in which this content is analyzed through the usual academic lenses.

It absolutely could be an awkward date question. Your reading selection could be a red flag. “I like Japanese novels - just finished 1Q-84 and My Annihilation… What are they about?… Well…” Maybe “I read books on personal finance” or “nature and the environment” would be safest.

@npub1cmg…rzd2 I could see artists/photographers feeling that way. They want engagement with people who will appreciate their work and might find text descriptions reductive and a bit tiresome to add.
But also, why tell people how to post at all? “Hashtag your posts, you coward!” “Please keep your posts under 350 characters, some of us have dyslexia, you know.” Yes, it’s good to make posts accessible, but too many people just like trying to control others.

@npub1jeq…jglm You are correct about freedom of speech and freedom of association being different. Unfortunately, federation doesn’t provide either well. It doesn’t distinguish well between public and private spaces and it isn’t all that transparent to users if you’re broadcasting to “everyone” or a group that “must” share a common set of values or goals.

@npub1jeq…jglm I don’t know how to explain it more simply… Federation is used as a means of extending your community standards to other instances. It’s as though a small neighborhood told the developer of a much larger neighbouring subdivision that they don’t like red houses and if you allow red houses we’ll barricade the freeway. Federation is moderation because it gives admins leverage to regulate speech on other instances. It isn’t a process where every user has a say either.

@npub1jeq…jglm Well, me for one. Strong moderation isn’t that appealing. It’s like living in a neighbourhood with an overly restrictive homeowner’s association. If it was easy for everyone to have their own server, and everyone did, maybe the Fediverse would be better - no little Elons. Twitter was, at one time, a reasonably open forum. The Fediverse has too great a potential to fragment into gated communities and ghettos.

@npub1yk6…4zz4 Agree, but the trend I’m seeing in this country is advocacy by people involved in business and community associations of various sorts rather than patient advocates, social workers or therapists. It’s coming from not wanting to see mentally ill or addicted people in public areas. Supports for those people are weak, but the CofC or whatever just wants them gone from the vicinity of their storefronts.
