#ESAEuclid had substantial issues with its Fine Guiding Sensors, part of the system that is designed to keep the spacecraft 🛰️ steadily oriented and pointed at the same spot. We already pointed to issues for #ESAEuclid requiring extra time for commissioning. 👩🏼‍🏭 The #Euclid #spacecraft saw unexpected straylight 💡 and X-ray photons 🩻 from a hyperactive sun, and the fine guiding sensor 🔬 software was not yet to specifications.

#ESAEuclid is a space mission. While that means it's not susceptible to rain and clouds, it is affected by "SpaceWeather"!
The #sun ☀️ is ramping up its activity in the #SolarCycle, and when emitting substantial bursts, these will be noticed by 🛰️ #spacecraft - and Earth. For #Euclid this can mean many more hits by #cosmicrays.

That is *exactly* what we are saying 😉
Main goal was basically to make sure that people who looked at the initial timeline and now see these updates by ESA to not be worried.
One subsystem needs extended commissioning efforts, it's all on software level and not due to broken hardware or similar.
So what we want to say: neither the spacecraft nor the mission are in any danger, but industry needs a bit more time until our survey can start. 🙂

The FGS system is a set of detectors and software that keeps the #Euclid spacecraft accurately pointing at the desired location. 👇🏿 👈🏽 👉 There is work on this going on and since the pointing accuracy was not as good as required, #Euclid temporarily stopped its Performance Verification phase to get this sorted out. 🤷🏻‍♀️

And no, we can't send goodies to every follower, as much as we wanted to. However, over the next years #ESAEuclid will provide science-grade data for 15,000 square degrees of the sky to scientists and the public. To everyone, for everyone!
That's 1,000,000 (one million!) times the area of our First Light images 😳, and a total of about 30,000,000,000,000 (3x10^13) science pixels worth of night sky! 😯

#ESAEuclid has successfully completed its #commissioning. A collaborative effort of #ESA, the @npub1e0v…42r4, and industry partners established communication 📡, turned on and checked both instruments, focussed the #telescope 🔭, and tested spacecraft pointing 🛰️.
This is now complete, and the teams have moved on to "performance verification", observing science-like sequences and calibration images.

Another feature that you can see in #ESAEuclid's first images: What are these? Satellite streaks 🛰️? Asteroids ☄️? Superwoman (or Superman) 🦸🏽 ?
No, much smaller: these are traces by #CosmicRays ⚡, hitting #Euclid's #VIS and #NISP detectors directly, depositing energy and electric charges in their pixels.

For anyone who would like to follow #ESAEuclid with their own telescope 🔭 in the sky, the satellite 🛰️ now has an entry in #NASA's #Horizon system. If you enter target body ID "-680" in their database at
https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons/app.html
you will be provided with an ephemeris file with coordinates. We will still have to check actually how bright Euclid currently is 😎.
