Real life stuff…
My 7th grader has been campaigning hard for a phone. We’ve somehow made it this far without putting devices in front of our kids. His older brother couldn’t be less interested in having a phone. But, socially, they are complete opposites. My 7th grader has a huge contingent of friends. And I’ve watched them all change, one by one, as their parents set them up with iPhones. Suddenly, the car pool rides that used to be full of hilarious kid conversations turn into whispering while passing phone screens around, or worse, each kid lost in their own private world of TikTok bullshit. Suddenly, instead of playing basketball, they’re all standing around and staring into their hands.
Meanwhile, I’ve been discovering that the high school they’re about to enter makes it impossible to go without a smart phone. School event tickets are only available as QR codes on a phone screen. Sports teams communications happen exclusively through GroupMe phone chats.
It’s so fucked up.
Children don’t need phones loaded with millions of distractions from real life. There is no need to start this addiction at age 13/14.
As adults, we are robbing the youth of their youth by giving them phones.

That’s not at all what happened.
Money did not move from bonds to bitcoin.
Bond yields started going up when they should theoretically be going down because of the selloff in the stock market (all caused by the tariffs). It’s been widely reported that the bond yields going up is what finally made Trump blink and pause the tariffs for 90 days.
As soon as that news broke, money started flowing back into the stock market and also back into Bitcoin.
It was NOT people running from bonds to find Bitcoin.

I have the same thing with cameras. Fuji figured it out and released all of their retro inspired X-series models with manual dials and aperture rings. I bought the first x100 model just for the manual (old-fashioned) control.
I hope a car maker goes down that road, even if niche, back to a more customized and tactile control.

My nostalgia for the 90s is rooted in it being a time before smart phones and social media. So many more more social shared experiences, unlike now with everyone watching curated content on their separate screens.
In the 90s you could goof off with friends without needing to record and document every single moment. You could make a mistake without worrying that it would end up online and haunt you for the rest of your life. People were on time because you couldn’t make excuses over text messages. You could be gone all day without parents tracking you and that was fine - because you were learning independence and how to be an adult.

Look man, I’m not a geopolitics expert. Just a guy that reads a lot and gets impatient with absolutist, uninformed opinions.
Biden should’ve done more to convince Zelensky that they can’t win and that they have to accept some losses. But he decided to let Ukraine dictate the terms.
Trump is taking the opposite approach and selling out 80 years of western alliances for his short term goals. And his positions are based on lies - like the made up $350 billion number, and revisionist history accusing Ukraine of staring the war, and claiming Zelensky is a dictator but Putin somehow isn’t.
A realistically negotiated peace probably means security guarantees for Ukraine from the US/Europe against future hostility. (Russia should repay damages, but they won’t). Russia would need assurances that Ukraine never joins NATO. Donbas and Crimea probably become a buffer zone, temporarily occupied by Russia, but its citizens should have a voice/vote in determining their own future. (But who could trust Russia to administer an honest election?)
So it’s a compromise that would leave everyone unhappy, like most compromises do. But the killing would end.
But instead of negotiating a real agreement honestly, Trump is ready to hand everything to Russia. So what does the US get out of that?
If I was China, based on what I’m seeing from the US right now, I would be planning my invasion of Taiwan.
