I think that's an excessively paranoid interpretation.
A simpler, more objective one:
Losing control of your ship is an offense. Even if you did it because of equipment failure, improper maintenance is an offense.
Why? Because losing control of a ship the size of the Empire State Building can kill people, if it hits something. And they did hit something, causing $100s of millions of damage and killing half a dozen people.
The crew are, unfortunately, involved in a criminal investigation.

I have found interesting discussions still going on in comp.lang.fortran, comp.sys.acorn.*, rec.arts.sf.written, rec.arts.sf.fandom, alt.computer.folklore, and other groups. It's still there. You just have to look for it.
