@npub1r47…wytr Hey how about not laughing uproriously as Facebook prioritized profits over public safety messaging like "leave your home now or you'll die".
It's appalling that they had no way to allow people to post public safety messaging from local agencies, particularly right when they spent a decade creating an ecosystem that saw most people only consuming the news from these agencies only from them.
All because they didn't want to pay for content.

@npub1utv…87lr I think this is more about the perception of governance. Bluesky may be awful but it still has to care about what users want. Whether that's a TRUE idea or not, the rebellion is against Musk unilaterally deciding things based on his sample size of 1. Users don't feel consulted or even considered.
It's not about features. It's about perception.

I have this theory that a lot of people are secretly nerds, they just have been shamed for being enthusiastic about the thing they love. Only if it's the current consumer thing (sports, cars) it's fine. But a lot of people just think stuff is neat and have learned that it's safer to be incurious about the world. It doesn't take much digging to find that spark in folks though, and it makes me sad that they've never learned how joyous it can be to revel in the fascinating details of the universe.

Because it's his to destroy. Does that hurt him, in the end? Yes. But the ego threat it represents when independent is too much for him to cope with. And he is ultimately insulated from any material harms -- he's still rich, and now you have no Twitter.

The implosion of Reddit and slow death of Twitter is fascinating. Us olds had an adage at the dawn of the internet age: "if you're not paying, you aren't the audience."
LLMs like ChatGPT sucking up everyone's content I think has deeply impacted how people see these communities and their contributions to them. They aren't benign now.
And when users see themselves being taken for granted... they don't like it. And they're realizing that don't have to put up with it, either.

@npub1a4c…t2kf I have this half baked theory about the missing margins that analytics and gamification of eyeballs and clicks have destroyed. In the margins of perceived value (e.g. magazine circ numbers to justify ad prices that paid a whole staff a living wage) went an entire sector of creative and critical voices, because compensation drives behaviour and what you measure is what you incentivize.
But we've been measuring what's easy to measure, not what matters.
