Dad used to fly model airplanes with pontoons, taking off and landing on water from a park by a lake. He did that for many years and loved it.
In the retirement home though, there are no lakes nearby. Luckily, there's a hobby group that rents private property and they all pitch in for events. Dad joined and went out with two planes this morning.
One crashed, but that's why you bring two! The second one he lost sight of in a fog, hit a thick pocket and it was a goner. He searched for it for a bit, then dejectedly went home. He's around 90 y/o and wasn't prepared for hiking offtrail, so he played it smart.
Hours later, part of the group shows up at his door, with his plane. Perfectly intact without a scratch on it somehow. They were elated for him, everyone had a great laugh.
What a lovely community he found. He'd been thinking the hobby wasn't fun anymore, time to let go of that. The people though won him over, he signed on to do it again next week.

Hope this message reaches him via a note to his work, or via coworkers. Many people go through life feeling they won't even be noticed if they disappear in some way.
