I just looked for annual max sea ice in the #Arctic regions, especially Barents Sea in this case, and noticed that you don't plot annual bar charts for regions?
I wanted to check whether a change in Bjoernoeya from 2005 to 2018 , and the subsequent change 2019ff was correlating to sea ice somehow.
My plot here shows annual duration of the longest "cold wave" in dark red bars, where all daily TMin are sub zero without interruption. The golden line is the average TMin in °C of all sub zero TMIn. The blue is the annual average of all TMin. (see pic 2 for axis and legend) Pink bars are number of days with missing records – if missing days exceed 60, the year stays blank. Station records go from 1911 to January 14 2024. The year is defined as August to July.
I noticed the change in rhythm 2005ff in the golden line, and of course in the duration of coldwaves. And again 2019, when variability returns to the golden line that was missing from 2005-2018.

Did you ever think what #whaling did to the #ocean #carbonsink ?
They weigh 7t a piece or so. A third of which is carbon, maybe? That'd be 2.3 t Carbon or 8.5 t CO2?
And before humans hunted #whales to the brink of extinction, every year, a quarter million or so old whales died and their carcasses sank to the ocean floor, taking with them all the CO2 their bodies had stored.
That'd be 2Mt CO2.
Uhm. Okay.
Chuckles. This question hovered in the back of my mind for so long. Glad I did the maths now.

Hat mal jemand Flugaufnahmen gesehen vom Hochwassergebiet in #Niedersachsen ? Gibts die Irgendwo? Habe auf YT geguckt, aber keine gefunden. Frage mich, ob das ein durchgehendes Gebiet oder punktuell mal hier und da ein Dorf oder ein Feld im Wasser steht.

Oh, Tagesschau goes #climate ^^ ? Ein Hintergrund-Artikel hier zu den 3 #AtmopshericRiver seit November. Befragt wird der #DWD , woher die ungewöhnlichen Regenmengen kamen und die sagen, dass es am besonders starken Jetstream derzeit liegt, der ein Atlantisches Tief nach dem anderen über Europa weht, ohne trockenen Hochdruckgebieten eine Chance zu geben, länger zu verweilen. https://www.tagesschau.de/wissen/klima/wetter-regen-120.html
Der starke Winter-Jetstream über Kontinentaleuropa erinnert mich an #HungaTonga , dessen Wasserdampf-Injektion in die Stratosphäre (SWV) im Januar 2022 nämlich laut #MartinJucker et al 2023 (Dezember preprint: https://essopenarchive.org/doi/full/10.22541/essoar.169111653.36341315/v2) genau diese vervielfachte Stärke beim Jetstream für das Jahr 1 nach der Eruption berechnete. Im Bild 1 sind die Modell-Erden von Dez-Jan-Feb mit ihren Windstärken-Anomalien in 300hPa Höhe zu sehen. Wir befinden uns noch im Jahr 1 nach der Eruption. Und das dunkelrote Band über Europa ist gut zu erkennen.
Bild 2 zeigt Saison-Veränderungen in Temperatur und Niederschlag, die im Modell für Jahr 3 bis Jahr7 rauskamen, zusätzlich zur "normalen" Klimaveränderung. Auch #ElNino wird von HungaTonga beeinflusst. Die Autoren schreiben, die durch die SWV-Injektion veränderten atmosphärischen Strömungen führen eben auch zu einer mehrjährigen starken Veränderung speziell im Pazifikbereich "ENSO3+4", und das ist just dort, wo wir die Meeresoberflächentemperatur (SST) als Messlatte für die Stärke von ElNino oder LaNina hernehmen. "This heating is produced by the zonally asymmetric distribution of SWV in the tropics, and consistent with the increased surface downward longwave flux over the tropical Pacific in WACCM. Thus, it is possible that the SWV forcing from the eruption would favor a positive phase of #ENSO on a multi-year timescale,"
Bemerkenswert ist hier, dass die SWV-Injektion offenbar nicht die anderen Faktoren beeinflusst, Luftdruck und Winde, die über die SST hinaus zur erweiterten Definition von ElNino dienen können. So kommt es wohl, dass eine rein SST_basierte Nino-Einschätzung nun bei starken 1.8 liegt https://origin.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/ensostuff/ONI_v5.php , aber eine, die auch andere Faktoren berücksichtigt, nur bei 0.8: https://psl.noaa.gov/enso/mei/ Auf der Webseite gibt es auch ein Linien-Chart zu sehen, das den heutigen Nino im Zeitverlauf mit mehreren vergangenen Episoden vergleicht. Erst mal war es schon total ungewöhnlich, wie ElNino sich aus dem negativen Wert von La Nina übergangslos in El Nino hoch katapultierte. Und genau das, liebe Freunde, ist eben sicher auch schon dem lieben HungaTonga geschuldet.
Lasst Euch nicht einlullen von Durchschnitts-Liebhabern, die meinen, da HungaTonga (temporär) nur 0.03C zur globalen Erhitzung beiträgt, wäre das Ereignis völlig zu ignorieren.
Die starken Winde über Europa, die große Wasserschäden verursachen, oder die starken ElNino-Folgen – die sind nicht zu ignorieren. An solchen Ereignissen wird der Stoff unserer Zivilisation gefährlich fadenscheinig. Durchschnitts-Lover vergessen oder ignorieren Auswirkungen auf Gesellschaften aber.

I don't get it. ^^ So Bering #SeaIce extent yesterday was 26th highest since observation began. At what day-of-year will the IF-clause in the last sentence in your description, produce no bar for an #Arctic region?
Btw, the GIF at the very top of the page is very cool.
That 2012 began so hopeful at or near 1990-mean, yet later became THE shocker melt year is more obvious in this GIF than a still image would convey.

Collapse in the 2030s means, only enough fossil #CO2 for 1.75C got emitted when supply chains break. After a few death waves, only 20% survive, most of these 20% will be in the #GlobalSouth who still know how to live low-tech. Then natural #rewilding in the Northern Hemisphere 🇨🇦🇺🇸🇪🇺🇷🇺🇨🇳 and also in the Amazon takes down lotsa #ppm every year for quite a while. How long tho? For such a question, I propose a new Representative Concentration Pathway for research: #RCPcollapse
A recent paper found that rewilding of 6 particular animal species could cause a sequestering of 6.5Gt CO2 per year. In a collapse-scenario where no fossil CO2 is added anymore, removing CO2 via rewilding also means, outgassing begins immediately. So for every sequestered ton of CO2, only half a ton is removed from the #atmosphere. (And outgassing = nature suffers.)
Assuming natural rewilding pulls in 15Gt CO2/year, then 7.5Gt are removed ~ 1ppm per year. And within 60 years, #weather again is what it was 2023.

Also mMn geht da nix freiwillig. Und Polluter Pays geht auch nicht. Planetare Grenze SIND schon gerissen, da kann man es nicht mehr uninformierten Bürgern und profitabhängigen Firmenchefs überlassen, ob sie sich in die andere Richtung nudgen lassen. Das ist die ja genau neoliberale Denke, die uns überhaupt soweit hat kommen lassen. Und Lobbygruppen der dreckigen Industrien haben bei solchen Freiwilligkeitsgrenzchen freie Hand, ihre gewohnten Partei-Spezies zu schmieren. Das können wir uns nicht mehr leisten.
Da das aber alles viel zu lange so gelaufen ist und NIX gegen die Zerstörung unternommen wurde, muss jetzt mit Sachrationen und Manpower-Umschichtung hantiert werden. Wie bei Churchill in England damals. Ein Staat fängt an. Dann folgen andere Staaten nach. Nach 15 Jahren planetaren Kassensturz und gucken, ob es so oder dann systemisch anders weiter geht.

The #Wetbulb or heat-humidity index is a defined threshold regarding deadliness if you're a toddler or an old person or if you do strenuous work or if you are a marathon runner.
Animals, insects, fish, plants – they have their own species' threshold re Wetbulb and more general, regarding heat. Our life depends on insects, plants, fish and so on, we rely on a functional, reliable biosphere.
If our civilisation weren't imploding by 2040 – my guesstimate – but continue, humans in climate hotspots would probably soon become independent on "nature" for food and water, and instead produce food from mined chemicals.
But as it stands, such artificial food and water supply are decades away and in the meantime, the functional, reliable biosphere stays the basis for all our survival.
Read in a paper; forgot which : a heatwave renders some pollinator insects 50% infertile. Offspring conceived in the heatwave are also less fertile. Subsequent heatwaves further lower fertility.

Fewer pollinators also mean fewer birds, and fewer animals which eat birds, and then, less dead biomass in the soil which means fewer nutrients for plants and animals or humans who eat the plants.
From Duffy et al 2021: Plants can be defined by their preferred carbon-isotope uptake for photosynthesis which also defines their resilience toward heat: their photosynthesis reduces when °C moves beyond their threshold. Less photosynthesis means, plant growth is stunted in heat – which reduces carbon sinks (– and which also means that food gets scarcer for humans and all living beings when heatwaves pile up. )
Most plants are C3-plants and less heat-resilient than C4 plants. Of the C4 plants, most are a kind of grass. (Too bad humans can't live on grass alone. ..)
C3 plants thrive at 15°C. Beyond 15C, their photosynthesis reduces and CO2-respiration increases = growth is stunted. From ~24°C, the C3 plants respirate more than they take up = they stop growing. If heat continues, they wither and die.
C4 plants thrive at 26°C. At ~29°C, their CO2-respiration surpasses their CO2-uptake.

Less biomass due to heatwaves goes for ocean-dwelling creatures, too: heat breaks the nutrient cycle and also lowers the oceans' service as CO2 sink because fewer creatures (live and die and then) sink to the deep ocean floor, taking the carbon in their dead bodies with them.
Water evaporation in heat is another threshold for plants: can they replace the evaporated water in the cells or is the soil moisture too low because during a previous heatwave, the plants had already pulled out all the soil moisture to evaporate it as coolant ?
Being a plant or a wild animal in #climatechange is not fun because you can't buy water and food in a supermarket and you don't have electricity to switch on the AC.

Liebreichs Podcast hat 1 Folge mit Rockström.
Wer mal im engl.sprachig geprägten Ausland gelebt hat und die für dt. Ohren außerordentliche Höflichkeit zur Gewohnheit werden ließ,
der erkennt bei der Folge, was für ein wahrer #Scicomm-Sysiphos-Held der Rockström ist und wie SEHR Liebreich will, dass Rockström in allem Unrecht haben möge, was sonst Liebreichs Lebensstil und -Philosophie als unpassend entlarvt.
Total unhöflich, Liebreichs Hinterfragen.
Und Rockström geht den Weg, L. erst Recht zu geben, um dann doch noch mal das genaue Gegenteil zu erklären.
Ist heldenhaft höflich. Aber da die Zielgruppe dort rechthabenwollende Männer wie Liebreich selbst sein dürfte, geht die dem Rechtgeben angehängte Erläuterung dort fruchtlos unter. Da hören solche Typen dann schon nicht mehr hin.
Naja. Ich habe Liebreich als "Gasverkäufer" verschubladet. Wie er mit Rockström umsprang passte da genau rein.
