The short version: one way we can make people's lives better is giving them the tools to take action in their own communities. The most impact for most folks is in their own cities.

We've somehow ended up in a world where Patreon is having to create hoops to jump through to make the business case for their continued existence; meanwhile all the non-VC-backed funding platforms are aggravatingly insufferable.
