There's still plenty of outstanding work to make this happen, but I'm determined to get it done!

I use a linux VM on occasion at work (sadly relegated to using a windows host), and using cosmic (with the VM's hardware acceleration, because cosmic doesn't support software rendering) is actually faster than KDE plasma in that same VM. I was quite shocked since cosmic is in such an early stage.

The #rust #linux kernel drama is showing to me how a lot of people don't know much about rust if at all, and will still speak confidently about it.
On the other hand, it also reminds me how little I know about kernel development, and about the social intricacies surrounding it.

@npub1ptm…2xku Is it a known problem for cosmic files to take sometimes up to a minute to show any files? Even when switching around directories nothing will show up for a while. Other than that the core apps work well for me

Why don't we have more "build-your-own-x" libraries for linux desktops? The only kinds I can think of are compositor libraries (wlroots, smithay, etc.) and login manager handlers (greetd).
We should have "build-your-own-xdg-portals impl" libraries, and "build-your-own-app-store", etc...
Would help a lot of smaller desktop environments reduce duplicated work building their own file managers, app stores, image viewers, portals, etc.

Just a summary of who I am, my name is Ryan, and I work on various Linux projects in my free time. Most notably I’ve been contributing independently to the #cosmic desktop environment, as well as managing the #fedora COSMIC SIG.
I also do random other projects in my free time - for example, a daemon to register desktop entries (https://github.com/ryanabx/desktop-entry-daemon) and a way to run flatpaks in a portable manner (https://github.com/ryanabx/portapak)
I simply enjoy making things :)
