The most chilling part of this is the guards treating the detainees so appallingly. Maybe they were told too to act as a deterrent, but they seemed to carry out these orders with relish. If they weren’t told too, it shows them up as vicious, bigoted thugs.
I would like to be persuaded that American people aren’t racist, bigoted people bent on persecuting and punishing minorities. I would like to be, but the evidence is building that there’s something rotten at the country’s heart.

I’ve felt this way for many years after transiting FLA twice on a vacation. First time to see a businessman in a $2000 suit be shoved into a side room by 6 agents, presumably for the offence of looking a bit Moslem. Then the rudeness of DHS staff when entering US and the Screw You attitude of DHS staff generally. Make your country unwelcoming and you won’t see me there.

They say a principle is only a principle if it costs you something. Well the first week of my #USboycott meant I missed a match on Amazon where my team #Arsenal won 7-1. So it goes. On the plus side, we had to try an alternative to #Heinz beans. #Branston beans are so much better. Not just a little, but much, much better. Why have I wasted so much of my life drooling over Heinz beans? Now all I need is a tomato soup that’s better and I’m away.

I’m qualified to talk about mediocre writers because I is one. And I fear the growth of copy and scripts written by #AI. Because machines cannot learn passion, develop fascinating insights or innovate. Because it’s only going to rearrange words, phrase and ideas scraped from writers, most of whom are mediocre, like me. Like the news presenter using a picture to make a “witty” pun on a visual, or the scriptwriter with hackneyed ideas. AI will never understand what makes great writing.

Putting #poverty into perspective … In the middle of the 19th century, about 10% of the population were destitute … around 1.9mn to 2mn in all.
Today a report was released showing that 3.8mn people in the uk are destitute, up 60% from before Covid. We now have twice as many people in extreme poverty than 150 years ago. Further proof that our ruling “class” has no interest in maintaining a satisfactory standard of living for all. The current mob of Conservatives now destroying it.

I grew up in this street. The photograph taken well before I was born, probably in the 1880s. Standing in the foreground are two men, one in a dress coat and bowler hat, the other in rough tweeds and a cap. Both are described in the (undated) archive as local characters. Three women pose half way down the street and a horse and cart is passing the house where I grew up - The Crown and Anchor public house in Clare Street, after it was renamed in honour of George Clare VC.

Shown up by the way man consultants follow trends and keep coming up with solutions based on how one successful person ran a successful company. And the focus is always on profit, too often at the expense at the well-being of the organisation.
