I had never seen this well-known cartoon in its original context before—from the 16 January 1898 Sunday supplement to the Petit Journal—and it’s so much better then!
The caption “Gâteau des rois... et des Empereurs” makes the cake imagery make sense, because of course gâteau des rois—king cake—takes on a particular meaning when you see that this was published just after Epiphany in 1898.
I hate it when images and text get stripped of their context for classroom use...

Very definitely not an oxymoron! There’s a tendency in U.S. media and politics to use ‘liberal’ and ‘left’ interchangeably, for complicated historical reasons. But they’re entirely different things (such that, for example, in Australia the Liberal Party is a right-wing party not very different from the Republicans in the States).

I’m increasingly coming to think that there’s a really fundamental difference between the antiliberal left and the antifascist left. If your leftism is basically about hating liberals, then you’re vulnerable to nonsense like downplaying the danger of fascism or even entertaining red-brown alliances.
It’s really scary when leftists forget about the danger of the right.
