#FediForum is such a lively, welcoming, inspiring event to attend. The way it brings together key developers, researchers, and users of federated specs and platforms is absolutely priceless. I learn so much and have such great conversations every time. My only regret is that I can't attend more sessions at once!

Hey can anyone on an akkoma, misskey, micro.blog, or friendica instance follow @npub1xdg…kswd and tell me if you are able to see the photos on posts?
I'm trying to test out an issue with photos with privacy signatures on s3 not federating properly to pixelfed, and I'm looking to narrow down whether this is specific to pixelfed or a more general problem with this approach + federation. So far mastodon and hubzilla instances seem to handle it just fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ah, I meant using GNU/Linux as personal OS on your PC/Laptop. My point was that FOSS absolutists back then failed to think about the common user/talked down to them. It wasn’t until apple did OS X that Unix-y systems became available in a reliable way for all mainstream users. I worry that mastodon/fedi in its current state is following a similar behavior pattern. We gotta be mindful of that.

#[0] I think we might see a day where facebook or instagram or whatever replaces them implements ActivityPub. That's the future I want. It allows me to choose decentralized, open source tech if I want while still allowing me to connect to and interact with others who want to be on a more centralized platform. I think being a fully decentralized absolutist these days is akin to saying everyone should run GNU/Linux back in the 90s/00s.

#[0] I guess I'm in the camp that is more interested in federated social vs. totally decentralized social. Most people are used to trusting companies to run their tech infrastructure rather than their neighbor for security, reliability, and legal reasons. I believe federation is the paradigm shift we need, but trying to push for complete decentralization is pushing for too many changes at once and bound to fail.

#[0] Yes, and we should be paying attention to that user feedback. Choosing a server is hard for the average person. I'm quite technical and I still don't trust anyone but the actual maintainers of mastodon to host my account. How is the average person supposed to figure out where to go? If we want federated social to move beyond early adopters to the mainstream there has to be an easy onramp network that is federated.
