Perhaps we need to ask the EU to fund smaller, more communal projects, rather than seeking to create Unicorns.

same, I did a Computer Science degree late 90s till early 2000s.
There's a lot that was missing from that course and also across many computing courses at that time.
We never got taught that vital human interaction research. But it's why I usually say tech and society.
Our courses get designed for research or graduate jobs. So how would we know the priority when your lecturers didn't consider it a priority.
People have been asking us now for a decade.

Look, we have got enough problems persuading people to meaningfully caption their images so everyone can enjoy the fun.
It's a systematic issue across FOSS and society.
The first step for all of us is to realise we've broken many systems, websites and made them inaccessible to others. We need to see and acknowledge the harm.
We've taken away the choice of how folks want to interact with their devices and see information.
We need to design in that choice from the beginning.

In this world of pandemics, questionable governments and questionable choices in computing when we need to embrace degrowth, I find comfort at the moment in helping other folk when I can.
A bit like the metaphor of a butterfly causing a small flap that turns into a hurricane.
You never know quite how far small deeds can go. Help others when you can, it can be just a message of support. Or helping folks on to here.
It's all I can do. Rebel with small acts of kindness.

Seeing some rather recognisable attitudes in arguments against NetBSDs stance against AI generated code.

Like aren't we meant to be better than that?
Disturbingly similar attitude to when we ask folks to not scrape folks posts on the fediverse without asking.

I have some thoughts about FOSS sustainability and burnout.
If we want projects to be a part of the commons to encourage the commons to join in, they need to be able to afford to.
TLDR: We need universal basic income. Our current systems can't cover everything.
If we want to prevent maintainer burnout, we need better support structures. Which isn't going to happen with anymore Orgs set up specially.

Reminder in General.
Tech is political.
What you don't see as a community problem may well be a huge blocker to potential community members.
Try to think before starting that "Debate".
Seriously, engage that empathy just a little. Don't take it as a personal insult, or as some kind of weird reverse discrimination. DEI is about more than seats at the table. It encourages a spread of opinions.
Step back. You don't need to engage.
Sometimes tech communities disappoint me so much.
