We don't have a PR budget or a marketing department, so it's up to me and our users to refute false claims made by established, or aspiring, hardware wallet makers.
If I have not been as clear on this as I could have been, or emphasized it enough: Our model has not changed since the outset of the project. Our software intentionally runs on simple, inexpensive, widely available commodity hardware with no software authenticity mechanisms.
This means that our users are responsible for verifying the integrity of the code they run on their SeedSigner, because you can run any code that you would want to on the device (with great power comes great responsibility). If maliciously modified software is run on a signer, there are exploits that can be attempted. Dark skippy is an optimization of an already known attack approach, but does not expose any new fundamental weakness to our approach to cold storage. If users verify they are running our released code (which is a quick and simple process) our security model remains robust and one that myself and all of our contributors fully stand behind.
Instructions to verify our releases are available in the repo, and if you haven't used your signer in a while, or if you have any concerns about who has had access to it, just re-verify and re-deploy our software and you are all set.
I will continue to beat the drum about this as best I can. Our L1 storage model is by design intended to be as trustless and permissionless as possible, for those who want to minimize their reliance on or trust in third parties, and also as a fallback for people in parts of the world where hardware wallets are unavailable or the attempted acquisition of them could come with personal risk.

In truth, I took a step back from SeedSigner development 3 or more years ago. 🤪 I wrote the initial versions of the software but I'm just an amateur coder and had the project been limited to my coding ability it wouldn't be what it is today. I focus more on helping connect contributors, helping others understand the project's raison d'etre, supporting users, designing enclosures, and other things that come up.

Back from Nashville, and after a little reflection, I need to reiterate a message I frequently put out there: kill your heroes.
Most of the people talking about the moon, laser eyes, power law, get on zero, digital energy, strategic national reserve, etc. etc., or who are telling you to buy this device or use that service are **buying and selling your attention to make themselves richer** -- they generally do not have your best interests at heart.
Think for yourself and don't fall for marketing. Educate yourself about bitcoin, discuss it with people you respect, think critically about the risks, and then, if it makes sense to you, make a sensible investment in it with reasonable expectations, while keeping your larger financial situation and your personal priorities in perspective.
I am a believer in bitcoin in spite of, not because of, all of the wild assertions, influencers and aggressive social marketing out there, and it has taken me 11 years to get to where I am.

Rando LN question for anyone out there with knowledge / experience. I have a node that has been up for a couple of weeks now, with five channels open. I regularly interact with CashApp and am having trouble getting LN payments through to that service; have trouble with small and large, size doesn't seem to matter. I'm however able to reliably send sats to services like Mutiny and Boltz. As far as I know CashApp doesn't have infrastructure with published details to be able to open a channel directly to them. Does anyone have any ideas on peer(s) I could open additional channel(s) to that would resolve this issue? Appreciate any constructive perspectives. 🙂

I have not publicly spoken much or asked questions about this for a few reasons. Firstly because I consider you to be a personal friend and I feel that you try to do the right thing in each of the projects and organizations that you are involved with. You helped our project out in numerous ways, especially early on when our core concept was brand new and still being proven out.
Neither opensats nor dorsey owes our project anything. I have been very clear about this, and I moreover feel that opensats is a net good for both the bitcoin and the nostr communities. But I have also avoided asking questions about the status of grants, much less about potential conflicts of interest, because I did not want to spoil Keith's chances at a grant, or negatively impact anyone else who might apply in the future for a SeedSigner-related grant. I think this speaks to the same self-censorship dynamics that jb55 has referenced.
You insinuate in the above that there has been at least one vote on a SeedSigner related grant. This would be news to me because I had the understanding that applications related to SeedSigner were being considered but were deactivated when it became known that Keith had received funding from the HRF.
While a required threshold of "yes" votes for a successful grant is of course entirely reasonable, "no" votes (especially emphatic ones from persons of influence) can cut quite effectively in the opposite direction. nvk's repeated, persistent, very public criticisms of our project communicate something like personally motivated animus rather than any sort of good-faith conscientious objection. Even were he to openly abstain from a formal vote on SeedSigner related grants (which would be in line with opensats' publicly established policies) other board members are likely to be influenced by his numerous public statements. It's honestly troubling that someone running a company that embraces "source available" as an attempt to rebrand what open source means, and who has referred to good/faith FOSS proponents as "commies", should be in a position to decide who does, or who does not, receive open source grant funding.
Some very legitimate questions are being raised about the parties providing funding, their motivations, the entities receiving funding (and those who aren't), the specific tech they're working on, and those who are directly (and indirectly) involved in the funding decision making process. I don't think these questions are being asked because of prototypical bitcoiner contrarian suspicion, but rather are the result of an evolving pattern of observable events; some might call what they are seeing as potential "aligned malincentives". The opensats funding dynamics and scale may also be arriving at a point where larger structural dynamics are coming into play and a "just trust me" approach to public relations and organizational ethics becomes increasingly less and less viable.
So where from here? I don't have a good answer and none of these are my decisions to make. Hopefully opensats just has a short-term public perception challenge that can be resolved with better communication and more transparency. But bitcoiners are a skeptical bunch and these questions aren't going away if they aren't addressed.
Lastly -- I believe that you personally have a good heart and I'm rooting for your success.

Some notes on purchasing vs. building a SeedSigner...
These are just some periodic reminders about purchasing a SeedSigner kit / assembled SeedSigner that I like to make sure people are aware of:
Part of the value proposition of our project, and DIY in general, is supply chain risk mitigation; you are placing some degree of trust in the person(s) from whom you are purchasing components if they know what the components will be ultimately used for.
If you do choose this route, carefully consider the reputation of the person you choose to purchase from -- they should have a personal reputation that stands on its own within your local bitcoin community. We intentionally do not have any kind of "Buy Now" button on https://seedsigner.com. I am aware of people building and selling SeedSigners on 5 or 6 continents at this point, and we also do not attempt to maintain any kind of centralized "approved sellers" list.
Also very important for those who take this route is that the seller should not be sending a microSD card that is pre-loaded with any kind of software -- individuals should be comfortable downloading (or building), verifying, and loading their own software if they are going to be using a SeedSigner. This is a reasonably simple process that has been thoroughly documented in our Github repository.
If you choose to purchase a SeedSigner, consider purchasing the signer as a kit (or planning to disassemble the signer to examine the components), and comparing the components you receive with images of known-good parts online. This can give you some peace of mind and is a useful process to spot any inconsistencies.
One last suggestion -- consider choosing a seller who has publicly committed to donating a portion of their revenue back to the SeedSigner project to support our contributors. We do not attempt to audit these donations in any way, but it seems like a fair request given the value our contributors have created.
If you would like to build your own SeedSigner, Pi Zero W can be easily found among the retailers listed on https://pilocator.com, and if you choose to do so, can be very simply modified to permanently disable the device's wireless communication capability. The Zero 1.3 can be more challenging to source, but can be found among smaller RPi distributors, as well on AliExpress.
The needed Waveshare display hat and Pi camera can be found at a variety of different retailers, check out https://seedsigner.com/hardware for Amazon & AliExpress links for those components. In addition to reducing your supply chain risk, ordering the parts yourself will help you avoid being placed on yet another list of bitcoiners.
