I had an extremely Catholic education, even though I don't have faith and I'm very rational and analytical when I can set aside my emotions (something I struggle with a lot). I don't believe in God, but I wish I did. Seriously, I want to believe in God so much, but I don't. Still, I feel peace inside when I go to church. My motto has become, 'Do no evil, and don't let others do evil things to me.' What I want to say is: find peace within yourself. It could be a walk in the park, going to church, or anything that puts you in a peaceful place. I know I have the power to be extremely destructive and evil — unfortunately, I can — but I rationally choose not to. The calmer I feel inside, the more powerful I feel. The power to become better for myself and others, without being naive. I know I'm growing every day, and I actively work on myself to enjoy every day I'm alive. Don't let yourself be consumed by the drama the media creates for you. Leave the toxicity outside yourself and embrace a new peaceful reality — your reality. From my side I still have a long way to go, but step by step, I will get there.

@nprofile…93wd it's really remarkable how something that basically uses a statistical prediction model to give you answers, after enough training can even simulate inference. What's funny though is that most of us, humans, really work like that, we aren't constantly applying inference and rules, while we communicate and exchange ideas between us - we really tend to fall into word salads, even between us.

@nprofile…93wd I see. Yeah, AGI has the same marketing power of web 2.0, 3.0 and so on... to my knowledge there isn't even a formal definition. Anyway, in my opinion, this doesn't take value from what has been achieved - and it's really impressive. I know that, until now, no LLMs passed the Turing Test, but this only because we are using experts in the evaluation - because I have no doubts that they will easily pass it if we evaluate them using the average joe :)

I'm a heavy LLM user, leveraging them for solving and studying both professional and personal issues. I'm fully aware of their current limitations, yet, as they stand, they truly help. The only thing missing is human transference, which occurs exclusively between humans. This is because communication happens across multiple domains, not just through words, but also through facial expressions, touch, body language, and even at a chemical level—something that is particularly important in fields like psychology.

@nprofile…62am ohh.man, I have so much love for that simple machine. Indeed it saved my life. It was my first computer and I did work alot to buy one with my own earned money. I was a kid back then, but that 8 bit marvel gave sense to my life, by providing a secure place where I felt secure, I could learn and put in place what my brain was imagining at that time. I was 12-13 years old, and that brown brochure that came with it, allowed me to write my first lines of code. Without Internet and almost no information, and barely understanding English, somewhere near Serra da Estrela. I was one of the kids that Sir Clive Sinclair tried to influence with this invention.

@nprofile…62am I didn't felt abused neither intimidated, he was polite and civilised. I have personally suffered and witnessed very bad shit - forgive my word - but it's true. I know what some humans are capable of doing. I have witnessed people being beaten, stabbed and almost lost my own life two times. I felt protected with that policeman. You must understand something, or you will understand as you age, people are animals, yeah, complex animals sure, and guided most of the time by primal instincts. That machine gun was there to intimidate yes, but not me, I wasn't doing nothing wrong. That machine guns has a psychological goal, it's a deterrent for the ones that will kill you without breaking a sweat. Please take my word on this, some people are capable of pretty nasty shit. It's there precisely to not be needed to be used.

@nprofile…62am ...also In Amsterdam I remember seeing a police man at the Schiphol airport, and we both witnessed drugs falling from the sky :) we both started to pick up bags of marijuana from the ground - he took all the bags and went straight to the police station. That policeman was wearing a machine gun. He was polite and very civilised, but I wouldn't want to see him using that machine gun! They were wearing machine guns for a reason... :)

Worse than that, I can show you what happens in a society where resources lack, and what happens to your brain, while you are growing up in such an environment. Basically you what rules yes, but you want consequences, precisely to remove from the society people that shouldn't walk around us. But this is a long talk, not possible to have here.

@nprofile…62am What we really need are consequences for not abiding by the law. Just this. Unfortunately, as others have said here, Portuguese people are not used to abiding by the law, and I see this exactly in several areas of our society, with corruption, even in traffic. We need, above all, a fast and agile justice system with real and swift consequences. In the aforementioned issue, we are talking about at least two crimes: driving drunk and not providing immediate help to the victim. Without this, you can throw or regulate whatever you want, it's worse than irrelevant, you are just creating more knobs to be used by opportunistic bad people. And please bare in mind that I'm against the 30km/h limit. One thing, that will not ressonate with you, is the magical thinking of assuming that all humans are equal. We are not.

You have people dying in hospital corridors, old people abandoned in their homes, garbage everywhere. Everything here is becoming unbearable really. Things are so bad that I have a friend who's doing everything to loose Portuguese citizenship, he is ashamed about Portugal - of course he no longer lives here. I know there are countries worse than ours, but this is becoming totally bonkers... people are dying here, due to bad management and governance. :(

Your thought is based on your own projection, you would be amazed how much human empathy varies. I bet that some of them would be mad not for the lost of their loved ones but for the lost of their income. In highly hierarchical societies managed by dictatorships empathy tends to run pretty low.

@nprofile…gr2u Just a disclaimer: I didn't RTFA - but it seems pretty impossible without any feedback loop, aka, introspection, with self learning capabilities. As they are currently, they can just simulate the thought process within a limited context. It's a great simulation though, and a significant leap into AGI,. but we aren't there yet, I don't even know if this is the right way to achieve it. One thing is certain, the context size and the "inference" surpasses a big chunk of human population, seriously, all of this by just predicting the next token...

I'm starting a completely different hobby outside the computing world: modeling. Last Christmas, I received a Revell Spitfire MK Vb 1/72 kit, but I only started building it last month. It's being a very slow build, with me spending just a few minutes now and then, whenever I have the time and courage. Let me tell you this, it's really hard! It's crazy how challenging this is for me. I had zero experience with this kind of thing, and I'm making lots of mistakes, but I'm learning. It's something that's starting to be incredibly rewarding — I feel like this will be one of the hobbies that will be part of my retirement! Maybe I will post a picture of it in the end, knowing that it's far far from great, seriously it's bad, but that's not the point.

I don't know if this is the right path for AGI or if it's even possible to do better with this approach, but indeed we have reached a record. The biggest issue is the lack of inference and the small context, the first one is more easy to overcome or simulate, but maintaining this for bigger contexts, is challenging.

I'm going to say something that will shock a lot of people. Even taking into account the limitations on the context size and lack of inference of most LLMs, I believe they are, in fact, superior to the cognitive capabilities of the majority of human beings. I know they can't pass the Turing test, but these tests are conducted using humans who are well above the world average. No LLM will beat you in a chess game if you're an average player, and they may do some nonsensical things, but if you look around, you'll find people who behave even worse.

I have found the cause. I have a snap called pygpt installed on my system, and I noticed this on its changelog:

This snap was installing the docker snap version without me realizing it! They reverted this today, it seems.
This must be prevented. Snaps are supposed to be self contained and cannot do these kind of things.
