The great thing about fediverse is you follow some interesting people based on a post or two to sort of try it out in your feed and now every time you log on it's people gushing about emacs and lisp variants nonstop and you definitely did not follow them for that on purpose but it sort of works out for you.

Chickadees are very present in summer but as a hardy winter bird they sure do shine in the bright bright snow. They are also curious, a trait to always admire.
Here's to all the winter birds-- magpies, crows, ravens, owls and even the mighty yet mite-y sparrow! I am sure there are more. They keep us company in winter and they show us that to survive it, well, floof up your feathers no matter how silly it looks.

From a short hike on Monday. A bright snowy day can be nice for #photography although things like ice sparkles can be hard to capture. I don't know why this path is cut here, it's too short for a person to talk through and def not an animal path. It's near the rail line, maybe related.

I absolutely love taking pictures of plants. The zoo conservatory is always good.
These are made with a Nikkor Q 135mm f2.8 lens from 1960s that I recently bought. I have struggled with this lens but I knew flowers and plants would be an easy assignment. Really happy with a few of these!
Flower photography is rewarding. If you think about it, flowers evolved to dazzle and attract so it's only logical that they are good photo subjects.

Winter details from earlier this week. Bunch here from morning on the way to work, and dusk on the way home.
Happily with these photos, after having it on my camera for about a month, I felt like I learned a bit how to shoot with this at-first-awkward 135mm (crop) focal length. The lens itself is also challenging in other ways. But I am glad to have it.

I recenty got a vintage lens, a Nikkor Q 135mm f2.8. I think it's from the 1960s. I read that it has a very simple design, just 4 glass elements (modern lens might have 15).
Overall it's a nice thing to own but challenging to use. I'm not sure exactly what kind of pictures to take with this focal length on the crop sensor. It's also ridiculously heavy.
Anyways here is a snap from my first time out with it. Lots of weird optical things happening here!

My main constraint is I do not want to add dependencies on external libraries, code snippets are OK. E.g., can PHP do XML out the box? Is there the "S" for simple in RSS really real?

Some fall colours and street portraits from back in October.
Fall in Calgary is very short, even for fall, which I recently saw described as the shortest season. The trees gild themselves for two weeks, never three. Weekends and work life being what they are, you might get one day to really enjoy them-- in my life this is Leaf Day and it comes once a year. Or this year, for me, not even that, though I did get out at lunch once or twice.

My way of working is to try and carry the camera and just snap when I feel emotionally about something. I do spend time framing/focusing but sometimes I feel like when I can think less logically and more intuitively is when I get picture I am personally happy with. Some telephoto pictures from Inglewood bird sanctuary . This duck is cuter because it is out of focus.
I love the look of this particular lens which can be quite "flawed" in some dimensions (chromatic abberation) but at the same time is very sharp and has really good, cool colours. I also love the messy bokeh!

This car is sort of like a local neighbourhood art platform. The trunk normally has something sculpture-like which changes every 6 months or so. Anyhow on this particular day in February the long shadow (sunbeam) on the hood was doing some good.

Night photography is something I am still figuring out, this turned out nicely. It was a really cold night in January with lots of snow around. The grocery store here has a little plaza with some blocks around on it and it made for a nice little scene.

Snapped this on the way to work back in December. I am lucky to pass through Riley park and also cross the Bow River every day. I take so many pictures of both and every so often get one like this that I think really captures it.

Another portrait from December. Taking pictures of strangers requires you and them to both feel comfortable and outgoing. Good weather helps.

'Nother good Dog Portrait. I really cannot recommend this hobby enough the opportunity to immortalize in art both Dog and Dog Parent is a privilege.
As for this one I kinda love the lines here the dog is sort of like *swooop* and the man is like *haha lean back a bit best dog ever*

Good dogs around. I took this in November but saw this guy again on Wednesday and said I had a picture of his dog and he said "Hes Photogenic" yes indeed.

This one is special. I pass these kids hanging out by their car often at lunch, they are so healthily social and it's nice to see. Lifts me outta the corpo grind kind of thing.
I wanted quite badly to capture them and their beloved car for months. When I first walked up to them I they thought it was an adult about to get them in trouble but when I explained, they were super happy to pose.
Very next day the snows came. This was my last chance and I took it and it turned out great.

Please please please don't try and bootstrap the development environment in your build script.
You can assume I have a compiler installed. You don't have to git clone 9GB of C libraries from Makefile and build them in a subdirectory. Really, I promise. I'm a computer programmer, too!

Another one from Butchart Gardens, this from the mossy Japanese Gardens part of it.
I have not managed a "sheet" waterfall before, I am so happy how this turned out. Rather than switch into manual what I did was stay in Av, lock ISO 200 and then just stop down until the framerate (er, shutter speed) was slow enough. I think this was maybe f16. I will use that technique again! Or at least try it...
