@npub1rem…fw9u And it's weird, like setting post visibility, I use that all the time. But setting post language? I do that never. And the buttons use the same CSS so you can't make one visible and the other not.
I appreciate that there are many multilingual users of Masto for whom this is a very important feature to have readily accessible, but it's odd what they decided to have part of the settings (i.e. turning off hover) and what is not.

Sometimes I am cranky on main, so I figured I'd mention a good support interaction I had today
Woke up to a text from my credit card asking if I recognized a charge. I did not. I opened the card's app to confirm it was really from the fraud dept. Called the number in the app. Spoke to a woman who asked some questions, confirmed it, cancelled my card, is sending me a new card, fedex overnight.

I am getting somewhat emotional reading about all the parts of S.220, An act relating to Vermont’s public libraries, which was signed by Vermont's governor today.
- empowers the Department of Libraries to develop model selection and retention policies for public libraries (PL)
- requires the DOL to provide Continuing Ed for public library staff (they do this already)
- extends enhanced penalties for criminal threatening in all PL
- lowers the age of patron confidentiality in PL from 16 to 12

3. Dottie uses her iPad for checking email and doing puzzles. She was getting messages that her iPad was running out of space, wanting her to pay for stuff. I know her puzzle app doesn't always seem to free up space when she deletes puzzles so we checked her storage space and it was fine. I suspect it's a somewhat pernicious app ad that may be a dark pattern. It's hard to click things on touchscreens effectively when our hands are so cold all the time.

Drop-In Time speed run today.
1. Linda was having trouble with her iOS devices. She had a Zoom meeting to get to. Couldn't use Zoom til she updated Zoom, couldn't update Zoom without her AppleID password. Was pretty sure she knew her AppleID password but it wouldn't take. Resetting it was a serious freaking headache which finally ended (after mailed and texted codes and using a "friend's" device) in her having to wait "a while" according to Apple and she'll get a password reset email.

The Worcester (MA) Public Library will forgive your fines if you bring in a picture of a cat next month. A program they are calling "March Meowness."
While going no-fine is a good goal, not all libraries have that option. This is an excellent outreach project (don't have a cat pic? you can draw one) to try to get people back in the library.
Fave part? You are not eligible for forgiveness if the lost item can be seen as an attempt to restrict access to diverse content.

I'll be home working on slides. Filtering those emails that can wait until Monday. Scheduling those that can wait for replies until (at least) Monday. A three-day weekend for some. Maybe I'll schedule those emails for Tuesday. Enjoy your weekend, however long it is.

Just a heads up that when I was getting my water meter replaced, Andrea's dad (the head of our town water department) asked if I would be up for sponsoring her racecar again this year and I said "Heck yeah!"
Chris dropped off some promo items from last year's season. She did pretty well!
All I do is chip in a few hundred crowdsourced bucks and a racecar in Vermont driven by a young woman has a pro-library slogan on it. Nothing finer.

(at the last staff meeting we were tasked with finding citations for supporting "keep it steady" or "turn it up/down." I feel like I may also need citations for "What is a normal temperature?" which can push my buttons a little because I grew up always too cold in a "[put on a sweater" household, and now I am an adult who keeps it too cold and tells my boyfriend to put on a sweater and I may need some perspective. 68 right? The answer is 68?)

we are now having a friendly debate about whether it uses more energy to keep the heat at a steady temperature or turn it down at night and turn it up during the day. The library director keeps it cool in here which is good for sustainability but sometimes difficult to figure out exactly what's appropriate for a community space.

One of the other librarians brought in muffins for her D&D group but she let me have one and I am all hopped up on muffins (this shift is happening during my usual dinnertime). I have a friend who stopped in to see if she needs to return her interlibrary loan before she goes on vacation for two weeks (yes) and then I read her Rhode Island trivia from my phone because my online trivia league had a one-day special. No spoilers but coffee syrup figures in one of the questions.

Saw a post on scots mastodon about "the Black Gaels" and thought it was interesting. I then went down a rabbit hole of learning about these Gaelic speaking twins from Cape Breton who probably inspired a Kipling character. At one point I was watching a YouTube video of a 1997 historical society presentation where they were playing a cassette tape that was much older. The image I saw w/ the post was, sadly AI-generated and will probably be the one everyone thinks is real

Saw a WP page I'd edited, not created, had been moved back to draft space saying "needs more citations". This is the equivalent, in my opinion, of someone saying "Try harder" and always feels unwelcoming. So, because I have a certain level of privs, I moved it BACK into main space, added three more airtight citations AND a fair use book cover image. Such a spite edit. 😂
The book, The Toothpaste Millionaire, was written in 1972. I knew the author. You might like it.

Book 9: Aurora. I pretty much know what I am getting into with KSR novels. This one was about a massive generation ship and the issues they face seven generations in when it turns out the planetary system they are aiming for isn't what they'd hoped.
It's basically three novels in one and, to my read, they don't cohere great and the one in the middle is mostly a stream-of-consciousness from an AI which I could have done without. Odd ending but still good reading.

I wrapped up my participation in ALA for now, cycling off of ALA Council where I was the Vermont Chapter representative.
In my final meeting, I worked with a colleague to ensure that virtual participation in ALA governance remains an option. We did this via a change to the ALA Bylaws which was a process best described as tortuous, despite everyone involved being lovely.
I'm looking forward to increasing my participation with VLA (my local) and decreasing my annual meeting load considerably.

Read an article about a spectacular map collection. The man who had collected all the maps (along w/ his wife) had no Wikipedia page. Seemed like an oversight, now corrected.
I think about these things often: it's easy to find citations (and thus write articles) for rich white men who accumulated and distributed their wealth. This is part of why English Wikipedia skews this way. Endeavoring to get more into Women in Red for my next articles. Anyway, here's Harold Osher.

Book 8: The Talk. Bell grew up with a White mom who was always getting mad at people who were racist to her son, and a Black dad who didn't really talk to him about racism. He experienced a lot of shitty treatment from classmates, cops, and authority figures and discusses how he grew up learning to stick up for himself but also trying to determine what the "right" way was to deal with racism and awful people, how that affected his professional and personal life, and how he talked to his own kids

Book 7: Angelopolis. The sequel to Angelology, taking us a little further in to that story. However, it was more of a thriller and maybe trying to do too much? We didn't get to know any of the characters much better and while the plot was complex and fascinating, a lot of it was told with one of the characters monologuing to the other characters who are often injured or tired or in a hurry. I liked it but was not surprised it didn't have a sequel despite an ending that implied one was coming.

Book 6: Reading the Forested Landscape. I am not great at tree identification. I mentioned this to a friend. She suggested this book which is so much more than just tree id-ing, it's more like "Can you tell what went on in this forest before you got here?" puzzles which come with a lot of explanations about forest ecology. You learn about things like blowdowns and pest invasions, fire damage and beaver signs. I'm not sure my tree ID will be any better but I feel like I know the forest better.

Book 5: Off To Be The Wizard. A cute, fun romp predicated on the idea "What if all the parameters that run our lives are in a big shell script somewhere and could be adjusted?" This includes things like not only where you are, but when. You can probably see where this is going. It's a fun doesn't-take-itself-too-seriously story about wizardry and Medieval England. Despite almost no female characters (the one that is prominent is badass) I really enjoyed this. Fun and funny.

@npub1c2x…w0nm That works if she uses Mac Mail, which she doesn't. She wanted something that worked for Gmail. And Gmail only lets you set up groups from the desktop application. Which, I know, her Mac Mail could be set up to get and send her Gmail but it's not the program she uses and that's what we were looking for a solution for.

My friend Marian shows up (saying "I'm not on Facebook, it's fine" which I think helps) and wants to set up a group email for her book group. From her iPad. There is actually no non-hacky way to do this which makes me incredibly aggravated. We try the hacky way (set up a single contact in Contacts with eight email addresses on the email line) and it's hard and fiddly and doesn't work. Marian claims she has never heard me swear before. I tell her she can do this from home with her desktop machine

I send him email with links to forum posts and instructions on how to change his SSID on one of the networks so he can hopefully straighten it out. He leaves. Joanne shows up sort of having a muddled day with the age old question
"My sister says I should get on Facebook." (note, not a question)
"What's your question?
"Should I get on Facebook?"
"Do you WANT to get on Facebook?"
"I don't know. Should I?"
I lay out some quick and dirty pros and cons. She's privacy conscious. We go with no.
