I mentally file Ghost World in the same hash table bucket as Donnie Darko. Similar feelings of isolation and mix of humor, scenery-chewing, and deadly serious parts.
It may also be because I saw a poster for Donnie Darko at the theater when I watched Ghost Workd in the fall of 2001 (but didn’t watch Donnie Darko it until the DVD got popular).

Donnie Darko did not introduce me to The Church (band). I remember buying my copy of “Starfish” (along with Peter Murphy’s “Deep”) from a mail order CD club around 1990-1992. I also remember the song “Metropolis” getting some radio play.
