Just returned from giving a talk at the CT Parks Association meeting on climate resilience. Afterwards, we got a tour of the arboretum at Westmoor Park in West Hartford Connecticut, US, where they have a nice collection of trees including a still blooming Franklinia and a huge burr oak with these amazing acorns. The park has a hobby farm with sheep, tiny donkeys, Shetland pony, alpaca, llama, and what looks from afar like a single belted Galway.

UConn Extension Disaster Education Network. Climate change resilience is about recognizing impending impacts and taking steps to prepare ahead of time to mitigate or avoid. But, often recognition only happens AFTER a disaster. Here is a good resource for preparing people ahead of time.

Cool and crisp this morning with a hint of moisture, summer waning, autumn ascendant. The sun filtering through the trees to the east stripes the house with bands of gold. I pull the vines down, reluctant to cut them. Fragrant with clean citrus, slightly sticky and clinging with grasping hairs. Muscles burn from lifting arms up, up to reach the vines. Delicate green puffs fill the basket, a gift to the brewer, returned later with liquid interest.

It’s always an experiment you build upon. I used to have a spot at the home plot where pole beans did well. Not so much this year. Our house has 90 ft trees, and I think just a bit of canopy growth has shaded that patch just a little too much. Light here definitely the limiting factor on what does well here. Can only grow cherry tomatoes, can’t grow squash here at all.

I’ve seen a lot of bitter melon in Boston at the community gardens. I have a persimmon doing well and want to get a couple pawpaw this fall.

Not really. But zones are compressed in the state. I’m 5b in the north east, but down by the coast in the west its zone 6. Winters tent to be mild, summers gets hotter with more hot humid days. I don’t think okra terrible productive here, but I do occasionally see it at the farmers market in late summer.

I think Richard is in Connecticut. I haven’t grown okra, but people do here (also CT). I think you have to start it indoors to be successful.

Flowers popping at #Area51. Three kinds of peas, three types of beans, tomatoes, basil, blackberries. Monarchs, skippers, cabbage whites, and a pearly crescent as well as several kinds of bees, wasps and flower flies, leaf hoppers, shield bugs, lady bugs, and vole.
