Scanning and bagging my groceries is not beneath me, but I resent providing my labor as a cost-saving measure for the grocery store. If the store is not going to staff cashiers, then it needs to open more self-checkout lanes including the one or two self-checkout lanes that have a long converbelt. I do not enjoy having to play tetris to bag my large order and having the computer continually prompt me because I am going too slow or not doing what is expected. This is why I hate self-checkout. I find techno-harassment alienating.

The recent reporting regarding the inability to recycle most plastics I have heard/read, makes me think of two things. Unless, these plastics are regulated, it will be near impossible for the average consumer to eliminate plastic. So, we can’t eliminate or recycle, but we can reduce. That’s not easy but not impossible. We can also reuse. What are ways folks reuse plastics? What are ways you reduce plastic consumption? I have a few things, but curious about others.

I’ve lost pets before. It goes with the territory. However, I have never felt the grief has keenly as I am continuing to feel it for our boy, Slippers. I think maybe a lot of it is he was very clingy to me through both of my pregnancies. Also, I never had a pet who lived for 18 years either! Here is is this past Fall with a pumpkin. What a rando.

We took the kids to a state park, so Ms. 6 could have a play date with a friend from out of town. One of the parents brought up AI and is more worried about AI becoming sentient and taking over than models being trained on data that is provided without consent or with equity issues when AI tools make decisions about aid or employment. I feel very paranoid sometimes in that I tend to see far right influence in aesthetic choices. For instance, if I see an all black truck or SUV with black badging, I really feel like they're the fash, but usually I have no evidence. Sometimes, though, there are decals that indicate the fash.

There’s a neighbor on our HOA mailing list talking about how they want the city to investigate citations for the apartment complex that abuts some folks’ lawns because complex residents are throwing trash over the fence. While I empathize with their displeasure at the trash, I worry about how that will impact residents. I also wonder how they know it is not thrown rather than blown. Maybe the dumpster at the complex is overfull? I also suspect there are class issues at play due to the apartments being section 8 friendly. It’s more complex than this person realizes, and our alienation from each other as community members makes it difficult to resolve.

Our cat has peed outside of the litter box twice in two days. I don’t know if he just didn’t feel like going downstairs or what. My main take on China is this: I take US based criticism with a whole shaker of salt because I think most folks don’t give a shit about folks in China or folks in Asia that the PRC impacts. Nope. They are just pissed that the PRC had the unmitigated gall as brown folks to resist colonization by Western powers. Do I wish that the PRC themselves were not imperialistic? You bet your ass I do.

1. I had an excellent row. I’ve increased my wattage without going above my max heart rate. My 5000m time is 2 minutes faster than it was last month.
2. I took a walk and no one was out. That’s nice sometimes.

Before I got into pour over and French press coffee, I was using a blade grinder. Now that I have a burr grinder (shout out to @npub1qqm…fggd for recommending a model that is going strong but was affordable), the blade grinder has been in a cabinet. Now, I have found a new purpose for it; grinding dried chili peppers and such! It works better than other tools, electric and manual, I have used. Unsure why it took me so long to think of it. Seriously thinking of growing some hot peppers and drying them. #cooking

I am a big old white American lady, but you’ll see some of my toots are about Chinese home cooking. I’m married to a man from China, and I’ve been to China a few times. I toot about (Northern) Chinese home cooking because it’s some of what I cook for my family. I love cooking and eating Chinese food; however, my toots are not meant to be informative or instructive.
