@npub15th…6nvx To be fair, history has not been kind to the communist. Each attempt to implement communism (as opposed to democratic socialism) has resulted in totalitarianism just as authoritarian as the fascists.
IOW, the fear-mongering about commies wasn't entirely without merit. Exaggerated, yes, but not utterly wrong.
The missing ingredient is DEMOCRACY. Communism is anti-democratic.

They are ... very dated. Extremely offensive in many places.
I tried the new TV series -- both Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys -- and I hated them, for the same reason I despise new Scooby Doo...
The mysteries are supernatural, now?! Whatever happened to pulling the mask off the ghost? Now it's a "real" ghost?!? Fuck that noise.

@npub1grx…uxfe @npub1exq…y9dj It's tricky business. I think the fediverse's growth up to this point has been due to Musk and the sort of pump action of terrible decisions that drove the "migrations".
So, Mastodon didn't really "earn" the users, in a way... just picked up some people fleeing worse options.
That can be an opportunity, though. Look at other FOSS projects that succeeded... Linux for example. It's still a tiny portion of desktops, but it's by far the most popular OS, running pretty much the entire internet. It's because of the power of the latter use-case that the former has improved.
But it's also economic incentive... the "free as in beer" exploitation of FOSS to save money... that drove widespread adoption of Linux as the backbone of the internet.
I think the open question is whether or not ActivityPub can be that kind of leverage. If it becomes economically useful enough to drive innovation around it. Obviously, some of that is happening now, with Threads, so it's a hopeful situation from a long-term perspective, IMO.

@npub12ze…hunm Yeah, I don't even have a YT account. I either search for the trailer I wanna watch, or more likely, I get sent a link from my buddy who does watch YT. (My Roku TV doesn't have YT installed, so this happens on my desktop in Firefox, or on my phone which is unfortunately Android so I can't uninstall YT.)
Currently, my only social media accounts are on the #fediverse -- this #firefish account, a #lemmy account (still boring, unfortunately) and a #pixelfed account (purely for hosting pics of my cat).
No FB, IG, or Threads. No TikTok. No Twitter, Bluesky, Post, etc. No Reddit. Haven't logged into LinkedIn in YEARS.
And, honestly? My internet experience is pretty great. Not terribly different from like 2006. Between a couple news aggregators I've been using for almost 2 decades, and "Mastodon," I have pretty much the internet experience I want. Could it be improved? Sure. But it could be much, much worse

I don't watch videos unless it's entertainment. Like the new Wheel of Time season. I get all my news by reading it, so that the emotional impact of those delivering the news -- and the agenda implicit in their appeal to emotions -- is mitigated by the voice in my head that is presenting the information.
YouTube especially is trash IMO. The only thing I watch on YT is movie trailers (see "entertainment only"). The worst is all the "reaction vids" where some incel is clutching their pearls on the fainting couch over "go woke go broke" bullshit.
When someone else is watching videos, I get the "fight or flight" feeling. Put some fucking earphones in! I don't wanna fucking hear it... never mind WATCH it.

At first, the sphincter is watertight, like a frog's. That's Stage 0.
Then, as the pooper relaxes, the sphincter widens to permit the turtle-head to peek out and see if it's safe. That's Stage 1. Think of that as like having a Trump-appointed federal prosecutor investigate Hunter Biden.
Next, you get the half-turd protrusion. Stage 2. That's like naming the turtle-head to be a Special Prosecutor.
Hrm... not sure if this metaphor is really working for me, but it smells right.
