One thing that struck me as I passed through #Jasper a couple of years ago was the widespread forest damage caused by a mountain pine beetle infestation. There was a huge amount of standing deadwood surrounding the town site. One didn't need to be a #wildfire expert to see that it was a tinderbox just waiting for a spark.
#ClimateChange favours the mountain pine beetle and increases drought stress on infected trees. The combination kills the trees, setting the stage for devastating wildfire.

The article says that Poilievre's conservatives are not your grandparents' cons, but I don't think you have to go back that far. They're a recent populist phenomenon, inspired by Trumpism.
"He is a tool of a fossil fuel industry that has spent millions denying and delaying the urgent need for climate action — an industry that wishes ill for our children in the name of grotesque profits for a wealthy few."

Yellowknife, capital of #NWT, is being evacuated at this hour because of a massive #wildfire on its doorstep. Enterprise, NWT suffered 90% damage by fire. Hay River is without telecomm. services as fire threatens that community. #Canada has experienced >5500 wildfires this year, burning over 13 M hectares; 6x the annual average, and fire season's not over yet!
The cost to mitigate the effects of #ClimateChange is high. The cost of doing nothing is much, much higher.

@npub1cz0…wk5s Thank you for this post. I’m in the same place as you at the moment, but like you say, I just keep showing up. Writing is funny that way. Some days the words seem to flow effortlessly, while at other times they seem to get stuck. You just have to be there when they get unstuck.

Although the environment may have taken a second seat to more pressing issues, such as affordability and health care during the recent #Alberta election, the UCP's indifference to environmental issues has far reaching ramifications, not only for Alberta, but for all of #Canada and its efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.
