I don't normally do special days but just seen that it was black cat appreciation day today so I am making an exception.
Here is my lovely black cat celebrating ownership of a new box with a huge yawn. She is usually cute and cuddly but I love her fierce moments too.

Now I am officially retired I have dug out my old family tree research and I am going to try to trace back some of my maternal lines which will be a big challenge.
Do any other Spinsters dabble in genealogy?
I did most of my research about 20 years ago in a break between jobs. I got totally obsessed so put it aside when I needed to get back into employment. It is such a time consuming hobby but so fascinating.

It's now been confirmed by the hospital that my Mum has Covid. I am certain that we both got infected when we were in A&E last week. 😫
At the moment mum is stable and we are hoping that there are no serious complications from the Covid but it is a huge worry. I managed to talk to her on the phone this afternoon although we mostly just coughed at each other. Mum is being very brave and is fighting hard to get back home ASAP.
It is now 5 days since I tested positive and I am improving but still feel dreadful. I have lost my sense of smell/taste and have a terrible cough but my temperature is back to normal and the headaches are less frequent. I had forgotten how horrible even mild Covid is.

Cats can sometimes have a panic and maybe this is just that.
Keep reassuring Farah and try not over analyse one off instances. Over time you will learn what what her triggers are and as she feels safe the triggers will fade.

Predictably the public debate about Russell Brand is now almost entirely focused on "free speech" and "presumption of innocence".😫
He had and probably still has a despicable attitude to women. His misogyny and claims of being addicted to sex and porn are not disputed. He bragged and joked about it all the fucking time. It also a matter of record that the BBC, C4, The Guardian and others all happily employed/paid him when he was in his pomp.
I find the handwringing by lots of media commentators nauseating, he is now being used by the same people as a symbol of how something was wrong but clearly not them. 🤦‍♀️
The squeals of protest about his demonetisation on YouTube from free speech campaigners are also annoying and mostly miss the point. Brand is free to say what he wants and YouTube and other online platforms can decide whether or not they want him on/or making money on their platform. The letters sent by UK MP Caroline Dineage were wrong and she is rightly being criticised but Brand has many ways to get his views out.
Anyway, after reading the reports in The Times/Sunday Times and watching the Dispatches programmes my thoughts are with the women who are now telling their stories. Even if they are not featured in all the TV programmes, newspaper columns, blogs and other online content, we are only talking about this because they came forward. We do not have to know their their names to recognise them as survivors and to acknowledge their bravery.

JFC! Just watched the beginning of Headliners on GB News where they have a panel of comedians talking about the newspaper stories for tomorrow and they just completely bottled it on the Russell Brand story.
The comics that go on GN News claim they are there for free speech but they all looked terrified saying anything about Brand and next next to nothing. I wonder if they are scared of reaction in comedy circles or are being told what not to say by GB News.

If they ban XL Bullies there will no way they can enforce it easily. I think it will make some people more hostile to dog breeds who are not XLs but have some similarities so I understand your concern. The real problem is the large number of uncontrolled breeders and bad owners.
My cats are chipped, vaccinated and have litters trays even if they go outdoors. I do not expect my neighbours to have to clean up after my pets. All pet owners should be made to do the same and also to keep them under control. Several of my neighbours dogs have been attacked by out of control dogs in parks. It is a big worry for them.

There is an increasing problem with out of control dogs in the UK and we need sensible conversations and practical solutions. Inflammatory language will not help.

Are there any organisations/charities that offer advice/support to older women who are left alone at home when their partner leaves their shared home to be in a nursing home?
My mum is not yet a widow but now that my Dad needs 24/7 nursing care and that she is disabled and housebound without a lot of help she is finding life really hard. She has family support but she also feels guilty about being an increasing burden on us. There must be lots of people in this position but it seems very hard to find practical support. Her friends either live too far away to visit or too ill to meet up.
I did get her to talk to her GP and they were supportive and offered a referral for counselling but she is not keen on that idea.
This is specifically aimed at UK Spinsters but all advice and suggestions welcome.

At a family birthday party today I found out that my niece's friend was a juror at his trial. The woman who kept samples of the drinks he made and reported him was very brave. It sounds like it was also unpleasant for the jurors who had to hear a lot of horrible evidence.

I was aware of the rows about the Disney remake of Snow White but not paying attention to it. I met a friend today who had a lot to say about it and so I looked at some recent news articles.
What a mess it all is. The young actress at the centre of the current firestorm is looking like an idiot and seems to be very annoying in her interviews but let's remember that she is not the one in control. The senior folk at Disney have created this media firestorm and they should be the ones held accountable.
Meanwhile the usual suspects in the media are using it to promote themselves and their publications. Same old, same old. 🥱

So Elon is saying that he will stop blocking on X. I have mixed views on this but as most blocking seems to be done by people I find ridiculous, offensive and very thin skinned as well as being from those cheering the banning of free speech I understand why he is thinking about this.

The Comedy Unleashed gig at the Edinburgh Fringe has been cancelled by the venue after TRAs found out that Glinner was one of the booked performers.
It will be interesting to see if there is legal action as this looks very similar to the cowardly way The Stand behaved towards Joanna Cherry.
Both Andrew Doyle and Glinner have posted about this so expect plenty of comments! One to watch.

Hope you all had a good day and has it calmed down on X now between those who are frothing about alleged homophobia by GC women and those raging about alleged pro-paedophilia by others?
I found it all very depressing over the last few days. Disagreeing is fine but the smearing, goading and persistent bad faith interpretations of old and new social media posts is horrible. It achieves nothing and is just a distraction. The same people seem to have the same basic spat every few of months. 😫

Visited Dad at the nursing home this afternoon and thankfully there have been no more covid cases after the first one a few days ago and hopefully in a few more days things will be back to normal. Thankfully Dad is unaware and just accepts that people are wearing masks without worrying about it.
The best news though is that he finally has his appetite back. He has always greatly enjoyed good food but after 6 weeks in hospital he could no longer feed himself and it was struggle to get him to eat anything. Now he is tucking into meals and loving the treats and snacks we take in. There is so little that he can enjoy that it is great that he is once again relishing tasty food. I have also smuggled a cruet set into his room so that when we are there we can add extra salt to his food. He loves his salt and given he is now living beyond when the doctors said he was dying I think he should have whatever he wants. He also likes that we are being sneaky. I don't think that the staff would object. It is just nice to have some fun with it.

It was confirmed today that my brother-in-law has incurable stage 4 cancer. He had no idea he was ill until he had an optional prostate cancer screening as part of a work medical. No symptoms and no clue but now he is preparing for surgical, hormonal and radiotherapy treatment. He has been advised that this is to suppress his cancer. It will not be cured.
Make sure you go for routine and optional checks. They may save you and/or give you a fighting chance.

Do any UK Spinsters have experience for dealing with care/nursing homes?
My Dad has now been in a nursing home for about 5 weeks and has mostly settled in pretty well. Overall the care seems good and although he was sent there for a few weeks end of life care he has stabilised and fingers crossed will be with us for longer than predicted.
However a couple of things are infuriating Dad and the family. The most annoying is they have "lost" most of the pyjamas and other clothing we sent in with him when he was admitted. They said they would label them but clearly did not do so and now they have vanished into the laundry and there is no sign of them. I even insisted on being taken to the laundry room to search but I only found one missing shirt and one pair of PJs. It really upsets my mum when she visits and he not wearing his own clothes.
The other thing that bugs me is the lack of consistency between the staff when we visit. All of them are helpful and friendly but they don't seem to pass on all the information they should. I am seriously thinking about asking for a whiteboard in Dad's room so I can write up key information like they do in hospitals.
I have asked for a review with the manager and hopefully we can sort out some of this easily and quickly but if anyone has any tips and experience to share that would be be very helpful. Thanks.

My advice is to serve up whatever you want unless it was the new potatoes that killed your father. That would be bad!
I have spent the last few months tip-toeing round my very emotional sister. All the family are upset about my Dad who is now at end of life care and we have been so respectful that at the same time her husband (who we all love) has been diagnosed with cancer. My sister has a lot to cope with right now but things are even worse for my mum.
We can't all keep acting like we are in the middle of minefield all day and every day. Sometimes just being normal is the best thing.

This week I watched Marvel's Secret Invasion and was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was better than most of the recent Marvel offerings and worked well in a TV series format.
I liked that it was basically a homage to spy thrillers with some sci-fi action hero stuff thrown in. Samuel L Jackson did his thing and was great at it. (This is not a watch for you if you do like SLJ.)
I also thought that Olivia Coleman and Emilia Clarke were fantastic additions to the MCU. I like both as actresses and they had interesting roles. Even though she is a good looking young actress Emilia Clarke wore practical outfits throughout and had no romantic storylines or sex scenes. It only half passes the Bechdel test as I only recall three meaningful scenes with just women in a six episode show.
I can't say much more without spoilers but after watching this I some hope that I will enjoy some future Marvel films and hopefully Olivia Coleman will be in them. I have had a big girl crush on her for many years! 😂
