@npub16uk…pv7k Ok, here I have to disagree in that open source projects do get abandoned and you're stuck with an old version. Sometimes it doesn't matter, but it might in some cases.
On the other hand, tools like #cURL are the greatest achievement of #foss IMO. A tool for a job, it keeps getting better.

@npub16uk…pv7k Excellent article! Sometimes, I have needed things like mailing software and while I needed the service, I paid for it. As long as you're not tied to something, it can make sense to use a paid service.
By the way, another thing that needs work in #libre is documentation. I participated in a products doc years ago, and think explaining it from the user end was effective.

@npub16uk…pv7k I agree 100% with that. My experience is totally anecdotal and subjective, and although I learned and use many languages, I am a horrible coder. Still, I get the difficulty of doing certain things that people complain about, especially with regard to mobile apps. As for Adobe, I had to go spit three times in the street when I saw the name. 😂

@npub16uk…pv7k Most of the early days, I had no experience with graphics software, so I didn't have any basis for comparison. There is free software out there now that is world class and usable, but if #libre is the same as #foss, it's not open source; I think the plan is to upsell later, keeping a free tier.

@npub16uk…pv7k I always think of the GIMP as a good example of the problem. Over the years I tried it, and I could never get it to do simple things, and to this day I prefer paying for software that's easy to use, does everything I need and looks good.

@npub16uk…pv7k Isn't it also a factor that they're often multi platform and that can be a time sink, making things work the same on all OS, especially mobile apps.
It would be wonderful if usability people and designers would be available to #libre devs.

@npub1g0t…tvm4 In my anecdotal observation, a lot of this is due to mobil carriers giving away subscriptions, too.
Today, being on streaming is a lot like doing free gigs for exposure. Where I drew the line is when Spotify announced that starting this year, tracks that got under 1,000 streams would get zero money, instead of the usual $3. I removed 135 tracks that may have earned $100+ in the old system. I refuse to let them use anything that is unpaid.

My wife and I had an argument this morning. Concerts of a pianist were cancelled because of a tweet he made about current news. The concerts were sponsored by a company.
She insists he has the right to express himself, free speech. Yes, the right.
I think the company didn't like what he said, and decided not to pay for the concerts.
Free speech doesn't mean you won't lose support, you have to reflect on consequences before making public statements.
Especially in the case of brands.

@npub1hpc…hjn3 The even cooler thing to do is to MAKE lists of people you follow for interests that you share with others. You can then publish these or give them to friends to import.
You may already know that such importable lists are in the form of CSV files.

@npub1hpc…hjn3 If that is what you want. I imported a list of over 1,000 journalists. Not all of them are active. Some are local, so when I saw local news from 5,000 miles away, I unfollowed that account. Everything you do on Mastodon is your choice (within what is available on the platform). I also followed lists of climatologists, other sciences, and a few hundred musicians.

The Import/Export feature of Mastodon is incredibly useful and I don't know of any other (non-fed) social platform that has it.
