Dear Americans,
Remember all those sick jokes about Chinese people eating dogs? That was done to other Chinese-Americans. It was meant to make them seem more alien and less human.
During the pandemic, people beat Asian-Americans to death, especially Chinese-Americans. The othering helped to make that kind of violence easier by making us/them (I'm half Asian, but not Chinese) less human.

If you propose building new apartment buildings in order to bring rent prices down, the NIMBY crowd will fight you tooth and nail on the premise that those apartment buildings will lower the value of their homes if you build them anywhere near their homes.
In fact, just about anything you do to bring housing prices or rent back down to something the average American can actually afford, chances are good the NIMBY crowd will fight you.

I don't know how much those speculators raise prices, but if it is a non-zero number, they should not be allowed to speculate on places other people need to live.
Enter the NIMBY voter. These idiots cause a lot of the stupid you see in American politics.
If we propose getting those speculators out of the home market in order to bring home prices down, the NIMBY crowd will fight you, because their own homes will be worth less money if you do that.

Every individual has a breaking point. Beyond that breaking point, they radically go from more predictable to much, much less predictable. They will go from irrational to far more irrational, become desperate, and very likely, whoever has been pushing their fear buttons will be seen as a threat.
I'm convinced that this breaking point can change from moment to moment, and from circumstance to circumstance. It's hard to predict when and if this will happen and to whom.

Fear is an unreliable means of manipulation.
Studies have been done showing that conservatives are more susceptible to fear. You don't have to consume very much right-wing media before you realize that conservatives are getting their fear buttons pushed constantly.
I worry that people fail to understand the danger of this particular manipulation tactic. Fear can allow you to manipulate people, and make their decisions more predictable, but there's a built-in limit to this.
