@nprofile…n7a3 @nprofile…fxax the experience of playing a VB is so specifically tied to it's hardware that I think emulation struggles to capture what it felt like to shove your face into that red void. Closest available today might be running Red Viper on a 3DS.

Here is the rarest game that I own for another day, Wizardry Knight of Diamonds for GBC. It's a great version, but I haven't played it in years so I might as well pass it on.
The Famicom version was already unique; this version shrinks it down from 20×20 to 15×15, making it feel like a new game in the process. It also allowed importing characters using a password from the other two GBC games. You didn't keep your level or equipment, but it did allow starting with a Ninja or Lord or whatever.
These GBC versions are pretty uncommon. Haven't decided what I'll do with the proceeds yet.

@nprofile…x4m9 I made it to summer of year one. Seeing me playing made my wife want to replay it. She the put 100+ hours, finished the community center, got some statue that spits out prismatic shards, and has 3 auto petters.
I managed to plant some nice potatoes though, so I think I won.
I can understand why people have such a love for SDV, but I find it overwhelming with the amount of content. I also think it scales in a weird way.
I might have better luck with Link to the Past, but I'll try the GBA version to be weird.

New Kitchen Injury: I attempted to put a bit of cayenne into a hot pan. I put it in my palm and did a wave over the pan to dust it evenly, but the heat of the pan blew it up into my face. #cooking #ImAnIdiot

I've been working with #WordPress for about a year now and the thing that has surprised me the most is that I actually like #PHP. I didn't know much about it, but had seen a lot of bashing it over the years. It's been dead-easy to learn though, and has a surprising number of modern features, like typing, named function parameters, match expressions, etc.
I wish I could say the same for #WordPress, which feels like it's barely holding itself together.

For #vgmwednesday here is "The Great Sea" from The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker.
How you feel about the song is probably how you also feel about this game. The player will hear it a lot, and it is most closely tied to sailing around the sea, a task many people found arduous. The heroic horn over the rolling strings is so evocative of the cel shaded sea. It has a clarity and drive of adventure and a summer afternoon.
Windwaker is not the first Zelda game that I played, but it was the first one I loved. Seeing the shape of an island in the distance and knowing that it's a thing I could go to changed how I thought about the relationship between graphics and gameplay. The game wasn't pretty because it could be; it used it's power to create a new experience. (And it's still lovely).

For #vgmwednesday here is the Boundless Ocean from #FinalFantasyIII #DS
This game (and this remake) are somewhat maligned within the series. The music arranged by Sekito and Kawamori doesn't take big risks and can feel a bit muddy sometimes.
This specific track is one that enhances the original quite a bit. It is first heard when the player leaves the self-contained floating continent to reveal a massive, un-ending ocean. This arrangement does a good job capturing the sad loneliness of the moment.
FF3 is a personal favourite of mine. This moment in the game has always made an impression on me.

@nprofile…er6e I got a laugh out of the reviewer calling Shining in the Darkness "crap", especially given Shining the Holy Ark coming to Saturn later. (Shining in the Darkness is great!)
I learned just now that Shining Wisdom has two different localizations, one from Working Designs and one from Sega Europe. The WD version apparently takes a lot of liberties and they read quite differently.

This game (Canvas Curse in the US) is one of my favorites. I played through with all of the characters (or, apparently, testicles) and just had a blast. I still pick it up and just replay levels because it's so much fun.

@nprofile…er6e @nprofile…xms3 it was such a simple thing, but touch input and two screens solved so many problems games have with UI and let us do a lot of cool stuff. And unlike the Switch, it still fit in a pocket!
I still regularly play my DSi (in fact, I ran through a grotto in DQIX this morning). It was such nice hardware, but games still had many design features of earlier handhelds (brevity, bigger UI elements, etc).

Music in #DragonQuest hasn't really evolved since DQVIII. I couldn't tell you which ones in DQXI were original and which were just rehashes of old songs.
Well #DragonQuestMonsters The Dark Prince seems to have no original music at all, but oddly the boss music incorporates electric guitars and a bit of metal sounds which is new (and a bit out of place, but the game is already janky so it's fine)

I get your point about people gaming HN. Like most social/comment focused places on the Internet, there's always a cesspool component to it.
In this case though, the "game" is using an LLM to get the user to keep combining items, so you start with basic elements and can end up making a fire flower or a Phoenix or whatever. So it is a bit interesting (if LLM is interesting, I guess)

@npub1qep…hklj. I made it a little past the end of the world. There's a lot to like: having unique dialog trees for almost every single NPC was simply a labour of love, and the meal and camp interactions felt natural and relevant to the wider story (many games with skits like this feel forced). My primary complaint is that for a game about adventuring, actually adventuring was not fun. The dungeons ranged from tolerable to obnoxious, and I never felt comfortable navigating any of the towns.

When I think back on games that made a big impression, I can almost feel the time when I first played it. Just seeing a screenshot of Halflife transports me to summer 2003 and my red Microsoft Trackball mouse; seeing a Game Gear pulls me back to sitting in a car at night during my first road trip; a spring breeze blowing a curtain reminds me of that time I faked sick in high school to binge Mega Man Legends.
Makes me wonder if where you play a game affects how much you like it. #retrogaming

@npub1qep…hklj I just got to this part and used the one egg I had to give Justin an earth spell. I went with that because it added a point of str to him, which is an interesting thing for a magic system to do.
I also glimmered a new fire spell during the boss on the ship, albeit without the SaGa-style lightbulb, which is also a pretty cool thing to happen.

After an hour, my impression of #Grandia is mixed. I appreciate the relaxed approach to dialog and narrative and how even filler NPCs have quite a bit of unique dialogue. However, navigating the 3D maps without good reference points is really confusing, and the camera makes me a bit nauseated.

Some of the bosses can be really long if you don't optimize correctly, and the scenarios have so many words... (And such small text!). Still want to see where it goes though.
