Yes, the fee per transaction will be high, but there will be very few transactions occurring on the main chain. Will it be enough? Why would more transactions occur on the main chain as fees drop? Do lightning/liquid nodes have an incentive to “settle up”?

They are striking a balance between ease of use and full control. Most normies don’t want have to deal with keys. Given that you can now self host you should now have full control of your keys though it is early days and the process is clunky. That said Nostr could learn a lot from Bluesky’s focus on removing the complexity of decentralization.

Thought for the day: If #Bitcoin fees become so high that the majority of everyday transactions can only be conducted on second layer networks like #Lightning and #Liquid, how will transaction fees alone be able to sustain miners once the payout for each block reward falls below the average transaction fee? 🤔

As much as I believe in Bitcoin, this is why I have also always believed in DigiByte as well. The world needs a coin that can scale on chain and Bitcoin can’t do that in its current form. Lightning has a lot of problems to overcome and is struggling to deliver.

One major downside to #Nostr is that it is way too Bitcoiner heavy. It turns the average user away. It’s all people seem to talk about on here. #Bluesky is full of people who say they tried Nostr but didn’t like it because it was too crypto oriented. Irrational that may be, but it is a factor in its inability to build communities beyond crypto. Nostr is bigger than Bitcoin. It needs to be more welcoming and it will remain in niche.

I’m a fan of both Nostr and Bluesky. Two great projects, with more or less the same goals of decentralising social media using open protocols, but with different approaches.
Personally I think that one of Bluesky’s strengths over is that it is very easy to use, whilst allowing accounts to be portable. That said it has not yet federated so we shall see how that goes. The problem with Mastodon is that account portability is not easy - it just create lots of smaller walled gardens rather one big one.
As for Threads, it is really no better than Twitter right now, just different. Just because a lot of people signed up to check it out does not mean they will stick with it long term. As long as it relies on the advertising model it will rapidly and inevitably enshittify itself.
I think both Bluesky and Nostr will continue to grow, whatever happens with Theeads.

Nostr’s biggest current limitation, compared to say #Bluesky, is its complexity. Bluesky is decentralized but the complexity of decentralization is hidden from the user. It has the ease of use of a centralized app, which is a major plus for mainstream adoption.
Nostr needs to create better solutions for handling public/private keys. It also needs to make it seamless to move your message history from one relay to another. I want to be able to add my own relay and have the option to copy all my historic posts to it. Not just the new ones.

Today I made a decision to scale back my #Twitter usage, and will no longer be a regular user. I have not deleted my Twitter account, but I have deleted the Twitter app from all my devices and will no longer be using Twitter except occasionally. I will not be responding to DMs or mentions. I am moving to Nostr and Bluesky full time. The community is smaller but it is more exciting place to focus my attention. Decentralized social media is the future, so that is where I want to be.

That movie was another milestone - there are moments in it where your mouth just drops open at what you are seeing. The line between CGI and live footage is no longer possible to discern. Sure, the plot is a bit hokey, and three and a half hours of blue people running about isn’t for everyone, but like the Abyss, T2, Titanic and Avatar it takes cinema in new and interesting directions and raises the bar on what is possible. James Cameron is a trailblazer, and I loved it. It was a spectacular cinematic experience.
PS IMAX 3D is the way to experience it.

I have no problem paying for Twitter in principle, but at very least it should mean there are no ads. Either the user is the customer, or the advertisers are. I'm not paying if I am not the customer.
Also, given that "a lie can travel half way around the world, before the truth puts on its shoes", I am not going to pay for a platform that welcomes the well-organised and well-funded bad actors who are using it to spread conspiracy theories and dis-information.

Who knows? Perhaps it is simply that a particular relay is shutting down and you are concerned about losing access to your message history.
Personally, it is all about having my own backup of my entire Nostr history, on my own private relay. Currently if you didn't post a message to the relay originally there is no way to add it to the backup relay later.

TBH I have only just set it up, so I need to experiment more. The UI it is really fast for me since it is running on a Raspberry Pi on my local network. All my events are also being shared to other relays so when I use @damus on my phone, it shares to the Damus relay, my private relay (over Tailscale) and others. I see no reason that performance should be any faster/slower than any other relay setup overall.

We need a #NOSTR #NIP that enables a client to download our entire event history from one relay, and upload it to another relay. This way if you are concerned that you will be deplatformed, you can easily migrate your chat history to a new relay. Or perhaps you setup a new private relay and want to upload your entire event history to it so you have a backup. Currently, as I understand it, a client cannot relay our past events from one relay to another.

Wow - so I am now running the #[0] client for #nostr on my #[1] server, in addition to the Nostr relay I was already running. Best of all this is all accessible from anywhere using Tailscale VPN. I now have a self-hosted permanent backup of my Nostr chat history. This is the future.

I've been a hardcore user of #Evernote since 2010 but I recently decided to take a look at #Notion and I must say, I am already considering making the switch permanent, simply for the page formatting system alone. I have not even started investigating what is possible with Notion databases yet.

#Nostr needs a way to be able to let account owners to allocate a special signing key to third-parties to allow them to post to an account on behalf of the owner. It also needs an easy way for us to revoke this permission at a later date.
This would allow multiple users to manage brand accounts. It would also allow online services to “tweet” to our accounts on our behalf us, (eg Goodreeads posting whenever you finish reading a book.)
