A lot of things taught by the Church are completely bastardized in order for the Church leadership to maintain power over the congregation. The concept of Hell is a good example, it is a complete construct of the early Church to frighten the masses into following what the Church leaders said.

We had religion class/cathechism twice a week, as well as our participating in Mass twice a week where we would do the readings, etc. and I was an altar boy for 5 years. What I’ll say about the Bible itself is that people try to put their own spin on the readings. Just like my mother in law, they will make it say something they want to hear, not what it actually says.

@nprofile…7c58 to the first question, I believe you’re right. I don’t think free will is mentioned specifically in the OT, just like heaven, it is a NT construct. I think the belief comes from Adam and Eve actually disobeying the command not to eat from the tree. Why would they do that, disobey God’s instruction? It only makes sense if God allowed man to have free will. At least that’s my $.03 on the matter.
