Me: Installs Apache web server, like I've done a million times. Works like a charm.
Me: Tweaks the configuration, like I've done a million times.
Apache: Stops working.
Me: Spends an hour changing everything back and scratching my head.
Apache: Still not working.
Me: Fuck it. I'll go read a book instead.
Me: Comes back later.
Apache: Working just fine.

Anyone know what's going on? Occasionally when I start Firefox or Thunderbird (both snaps under Kubuntu) they fail to start. Been happening for a long time but seems to happen at random, & always with these messages "... is not a snap cgroup" & "Unable to assign [undefined] to QString".
Searching for the cgroup message suggests it's to do with running a VPS, but I'm not running a VPS. The other message seems too common to be helpful & might be unrelated.

My concern was that if Mastodon was its own server I'd have to run two servers in parallel, but since that's not the case, the question is a bit moot.
I'm so used to Apache+PHP+MySQL that in my little world nothing else exists 🤣 Although I do currently deploy to MariaDB, but since they're 99% compatible I've never had to bother enough with the differences to switch to MariaDB locally.

I see that the default/suggested setup for Mastodon involves Nginx ... for some reason I had convinced myself that Mastodon was its own server. I guess that means there's no particular reason I couldn't just run Mastodon on Apache instead.

Say I wanted to host a handful of small personal websites and a small personal Mastodon instance, could I do so on a single server?
That is, this one server would have to run (at a minimum) Apache, PHP, MySQL, and whatever Mastodon needs.
Is it possible? Is it advisable? Or is this a terrible, awful, no-good idea? #LazyWeb
