Dude, Pete posted some based take the other day on old Greasyson and his software. He's trying too hard to create a twitter clone and may be either knowingly or unknowningly doing damage to fedi with his flippant design decisions of adding all these questionable knobs and buttons and goofy shit pasted on. The only reason instances like NCD and Poast seem so slick and nice is because the admin are throwing really nice hardware at the problem, but the quality of the code of that stack is HIGHLY questionable.

I personally mute 3 lolicon posting instances because I'm not down with sexualized depictions of children, I think it's abhorrent. But our instance blocks no one, we leave it up to the individual user to use the moderation tools (block and mute) at their disposal and chose how they want to curate their timelines. I guess some of us in the open source community are resistant to change. There is a rich history of Linux and BSD, X11 and it's various desktop environments and window managers. This sudden shift to rapid adoption of wayland, sway and hyperland as the norm can be disconcerting. Just as people were resistant and suspicious to the rapid adoption of the systemd init system and pulseaudio, over traditional stacks like rc scripts and alsa or oss.

Back on the subject of OpenBSD, I think that OpenBSD does have a manpower and funding issue. The desired software that people want on that system, like wayland, OpenZFS, wine, KDE plasma, vscode and others, require massive porting efforts and tons of challenges to overcome. A lot this software is written with Linux in mind and have to be heavily patched. It would help the software ecosystem as a whole if software was written to be more OS agnostic and everyone would follow POSIX standards more rigorously.

Just because you had a skill issue doesn't mean you speak for the rest of BSD. The admin of this instance and I daily drive OpenBSD and it works perfectly well and is very well engineered. I built an entire monetized YouTube channel on tech content made with OpenBSD and FOSS tools. Several users here daily drive FreeBSD, and in some ways it out performs Linux. One of big advantages of using BSD's is they have largely retained a lot of the traditional concepts, practices and utilities of original UNIX and the culture around it.
Whereas Linux has largely abandoned a lot of these things (with the exception of slackware, void, etc) and is no longer recognizable in a lot of aspects. :dude_smug:
