Well, I own a domain and I "verify identity" of people you hate. I do it on purpose because it makes you mad and I'm a big meanie troll doodoohead.
The people I verify just so happen to like talking to each other. They're a community. Maybe they talk out-of-band on Matrix or Discord or whatever.
Lots of people hate that community because they and the one who "verifies" them are a bunch of booger eaters. So what's the obvious solution? Let a person block the entire domain--any pubkey verified by that domain doesn't show up anymore.
Or maybe I'm just a spammer who wants to break through everyone's clients by "verifying" my many spam accounts (so many that nobody can hope to manually report them all). I buy my own cheap domain name and use it to get a fancy little checkmark or whatever clients decide to show, and then spam away. The obvious solution? Don't trust that domain to verify pubkeys.
This sort of thing is going to become commonplace.
"Verification" works when you trust the verifiers. Right now Nostr has mostly good (albeit very boring) actors and verifiers, but that is going to change if momentum picks up.

That would make a community centered around the domain and give it a little bit of meaning.

Maybe there's a way to make the nip-05 identity more meaningful, so you actually associate with others on the same domain even if you don't all use the same relay.

For instance, there's really no point in picking one relay over another. They're all basically the same with relatively minor differences. Certainly there's no way for communities to form around a relay, so what's the point of operating a relay other than some vague sense of contribution? That motivates the naive PV crowd, but in the real world the liability is just too high.

I do hope Nostr wins and the people on Nostr branch out to things other than bitcoin. I like the protocol way better than fedi (provided fiatjaf et al keep it nice and relatively simple).

It's effectively an echo chamber and isn't really reaching anyone new, and it keeps us here and away from impressionable people whose minds could otherwise be changed. I don't want to say that "we're fine" for sure, but there is a reason it's still around. It's also a pressure release valve where people can whine and feel better.

I understand why Alex left Truth Social...Probably was a good move, the Trump train derailed long ago. There's not really any non-tranny funding for fedi, especially with the threats from big corps to take over (so far nothing, but the threat remains). I guess taking a risk on Nostr makes sense. Maybe he can breathe some actual life into it. He's already made a lot of improvements to their specs.

@npub1pnp…52zw @npub189e…3wmk It's just a terrible language and I can't believe anyone would use it for any new project. It was good in 2007 when people were still trying to figure out how the internet was going to work.
It's just one of those languages where, if you innocently mess one little thing up, it ends up being a data breach later because some function you used didn't work the way it seemed like it should based on the function name and documentation.
That and the server-side configuration to actually get it to work...Apache/Nginx modules...It's a hassle and not a great choice for a serious developer anymore. Maybe for a little hobby project the old LAMP stack works, I guess.

Nostr is Just r/bitcoin. There were some who tried to make it a little more lively, but they were shut down. It was clear that the authors of the protocol and clients were more interested in zaps than building an interesting community (or, really, communities).
