I used to argue with people a lot about economics when I was younger (can you tell?) and let me tell you the average american believes some truly batshit things about it. "don't you think investors deserve to be rewarded for taking a risk on an investment?" buddy I walk in here and invest a hundred dollars worth of labor into this enterprise and what I get is a check for $7.25 and shown the door, where's my exponential growth?

I've written a program that just writes a file, forks, reads back from the child, joins, then reads back from the parent. it's 137 lines long, contains two wrapper functions that should just be in the standard library, references no fewer than five distinct integer types to accommodate different APIs, has numerous opportunities to accidentally invoke undefined behavior by screwing up a varargs call or passing the wrong buffer length or something, and is like 90% screwing around with statuses by weight
can you imagine if the last fifty years of computing had been built on an operating system and systems language that weren't comically obtuse

does unix have *any* way to share a file without also sharing the description state?? like yeah you can just call open again if it's a named file but dup doesn't even give you your own file position???

TIL that file descriptors aren't process-specific handles to kernel objects, they're process-specific *references* to GLOBAL handles to kernel objects. who the fuck designed this???

weight-based inventory limits are especially egregious. weight can be a good mechanic for equipment balancing but if you're gonna ding me half a point for entry useless consumable I pick up, I end up feeling like I'm being punished for playing the game

I mean it makes sense to limit the number of heals or buffs or whatever you can use in an encounter but if I have to stop what I'm doing to go sell off my extra Rusted Springs every time I hit 99 you're just wasting my time with an arbitrary limit
