One of the things I sometimes bring up: Part of the reason Hitler was able to get away with what he did is that the people he targeted were less than 2% of the population of the region at the time. It was easy to scapegoat and eliminate them without too much disruption to everyone else.
That's not the case here and now. Trump and co. can't just jail or kill off 35% of the population. Entire industries rely on queer, PoC folks and immigrants. Everyone will know someone targeted.

Fair. But TBH, learned helplessness like that generally tends to be individualized. What's happening here is selfish people weaponizing their own ennui and need to be catered to to hold literally the entire world hostage. It's right there in their demand that Biden "earn" their votes, rather than being driven by a genuine sense that other people matter. There's no reasoning with that attitude.

It's hard not to be emotional when your own life and the lives of your kids are at stake. Politics is always personal. It's not something you can divorce yourself from and try to be objective about. Human suffering--both big and small picture--has to be part of the equation.
And the equation in this case is completely clear: a near-guarantee of mass suffering on a scale we can barely imagine.

Your gardening is a hobby. It's not subsistence level. Not for you, not for anyone else. The kind of gardening necessary for subsistence takes way, way more time, space and resources. There's a reason subsistence farming isn't common in developed countries. One bad year or natural disaster and your whole family starves.

And what of the value of the labor involved? "Free" isn't free when you're spending hours on planting, watering, weeding, fertilizing and pest control.
It's impossible for a single person to garden enough to feed even two people unless they're spending way more than a 40-hour week doing it.
