It's astounding how rapidly the world moves. I purchased a device, and get real-time notifications of its progress from Shanghai, China across the world to my home in Eastern United states.
In *two days*, this device has crossed the globe. The infrastructure (and emissions! and expense!) required to make this miraculous event happen is just... stunning.

Holy cow, Connie Willis' "Doomsday Book" was amazing. A slow burn for the first half, and then everything lets loose. This was obviously a well researched novel. The way the characters (especially the Americans) acted during the epidemic was strikingly accurate to my own covid experience.

Reading #TheLordOfTheRings again this year. I'm struck by how disconnected all the people are. Roads are infrequently traveled. Lothlorien has lost contact with everyone except Rivendell. In all of Gondor, only Denethor remembers from lore that Rivendell even exists. In the north kingdom there is barely even traffic between Bree and the Shire.
The world shattered at the end of the Second Age and the people in it never came back together.

I've been contacted by a man who wants to leave Afghanistan (he's a national). He's looking for a way to get a visa to another country, such as Brazil.

@npub1f8s…65vw I have a carving set, something like the one pictured below. I sketched the lines using a speed square (to keep things simple, everything is a straight line, and most come together at 90 degree angles). Then I used the broad, flat blade and a small hammer to carve the grooves. I had to cut with a smaller blade the for short, delicate lines in the "leaves".

1. Hammer the wire until it is as thin as possible
2. Make the cuts deep and narrow
I was not hammering enough and the wire was somewhat rounded. Because of this I was making wide cuts to fit the inlay, and it bounced around. Because of this I had to use a lot of glue. Lots of hammering. The whole thing was, to say the least, messy.
With thin wire, the sides of the narrow cut grip the wire. It just requires a little glue to keep together!

Omg. On the *last* element of my wire inlay project I figured out how to do inlay correctly. Look at the difference!
Moving forward (if I do more inlay) I'm going to save so much glue, prevent so much damage to the wood!
