I had at least two requests to make my weird white-text-on-purple-background text more readable for these text-heavy entries, so I added an accessiblity plugin to accommodate that. Look for the little stick figure floating menu button in the left hand side, click it and adjust as needed to make things more readable for your preferences.

I reached out to his mother, but it's been literal years since we spoke and I don't even know if the number I have for her still works.
This is the second cousin I've lost in their 20s (first was an overdose). And while neither was the kind of guy who'd garner much sympathy from most people, they were still people with their while lives ahead of them--plenty of time for a redemption story. Or not! But now we'll never know.

Still don't know what killed him but he was into meth, so I'm guessing it was related to that. He was also a danger/adrenaline junkie (bull riding, motorcycles, anything that goes fast) so it could have been related to that.
I'm not terribly close to any of my family outside of my immediate circle (Mom/Dad, brothers, their offspring and my offspring) but it still feels terrible.

I guess I figured he'd take the usual path for my family: years of aimless drifting, a few brushes with the law, maybe some light addiction problems... But then sorry himself out, more or less, in his early 30s and settle into some kind of decent life for himself.
Instead, looks like he took (the also popular for my family) path B: serious issues leading to early/tragic death.

His struggles, and my attempts to help him, actually got his mother and I to reconnect after our previous falling out, but we inevitably had to re distance ourselves from each other due to our conflicting worldviews.
Now I feel guilty about not trying harder to keep that connection alive, and also about not trying harder to help him out.

The young man who died was a good but thoroughly messed up kid. He came to stay with me a few years ago for a while and I tried to help him get his life on track. I offered to let him live with me, with a few stipulations (a set period of time, needed to have some money saved up and I'd help him find a job) but he declined.
While he was around I got to know him just enough for this to be really painful in a concrete way instead of in the abstract.

Feeling some very complex grief. Just heard from my mother that one of my cousins died, very young (25? 26 maybe?). I didn't know him super well, but he's the son of another cousin I grew up with, who was like a sister to me... Tho we've had a bit of a falling out/distancing as adults, as she is deeply reactionary and religious and I... am not.
