This started as 3 plug size plants this spring. It's clearly something we are going to have to keep watching so that it doesn't take over. It is just starting to come into bloom. The flowers are just starting and should be more impressive soon.

This is a picture of morning glories that my parents planted at their place. They were planted from seed at least 20 years ago. Every year they pop up in various places around the yard and my mother just weeds them out if they are somewhere she doesn't want them. There are always some that show up and grow over the arbor. We are in zone 5 (northern Illinois)

In addition to the phenomenal sales areas, there are also a couple display gardens. One in full sun and one in shade. Both are intensely gardened and well worth the time to browse around.

We are taking a short vacation in Northern Wisconsin (family cabin). Spouse found a garden center he wanted to visit - Winter Greenhouse - about 40 miles away. We spent nearly 4 hours there today! I've been to many garden centers and greenhouses and this may be the best I've seen.
These photos are of the hosta house. It's hosta all the way back. Tons of different varieties.

Some photos taken about a week ago out in the garden. There is a lot of yellow right now. The really tall ones are Cup Plant (Silphium perfoliatum) and Cutleaf coneflower 'Herbstsonne' (Rudbeckia laciniata 'Herbstsonne'). I'm not sure on the shorter Rudbeckia- might be 'fuldiga'. The #Polinators love all of them.

We didn't see many dahlias at the Ball display garden. Probably because they are either expensive annuals in our climate or you have to dig them up and store them over the winter (zone 5). These are the only two I photographed. The larger one was unlabeled. The smaller, more open one, is Dahlia Dalina Grande Cancun.

These pots are also from the "Rays for Days" area (see last post). These are both plants I have never seen used in containers before. Ajuga is usually a ground cover in gardens and I usually see cleome in flower beds. Often mixed with other flowers. The plant behind the ajuga is a verbena.

This is another 'new to me ' (but clearly not new to many others once I searched for it!) plant. This was growing at the Ball display garden over a long retaining wall. It looks like it is often grown up trellis, but this was spreading along the ground and over the wall. It was unlabeled, but Google image search identifies it as Dolichos lablab, Purple Hyacinth Bean.

An area in the Ball display garden is called The Windings. I'm assuming this is because the pathway winds up to the top of a hill. This area is landscaped and looks more like a regular garden rather than test beds. The proportions of annuals to perennials is still ridiculous!

@npub1jnt…88c4 Yes, most of what we grow is given away. There is a large factory attached to my spouse's office and he puts a lot of it out in the lunch room for anyone to take. It is usually gone in under an hour! He is always surprised by how fast it disappears - even when he brings multiple boxes filled with peppers & tomatoes.
Our neighbors all know to stop by if they need any and some of it goes to a local food pantry.

It has been a full week since we visited the beautiful gardens at Ball Horticulture's headquarters. I have been posting pictures of the gardens every day and am only about 2/3 through!

These double coneflowers (Echinacea Double Scoop) are certainly eye catchers, but I wonder if they are good for #pollinators. There seemed to be far fewer bees on these than the standard coneflowers.

We have never had good luck with lavender in our yard. It usually doesn't make it through the winter or only holds on for a couple years. I'm hoping I'll have a chance to visit the Ball garden next year and see how this one holds up

We saw guara throughout the Ball display gardens in both annual and perennial plantings. It is an awesome plant to combine with others. (The "filler" in the classic filler/spiller/thriller combo)

I've never encountered this plant before, but that might be because we don't have a rock garden. The common name seems to be 'Ice Plant' and it is a succulent ground cover. The super shiny bright flowers really catch your eye!

One section of the Ball display gardens is all containers. Keep in mind that these displays are aimed at growers and are promoting Ball's products and showcasing what's new.
This photo is showing "mixes" that they are promoting that work well together. For example, the red/yellow pot in the center is called Surviving Summer and includes PortoGrande Orange Portulaca, Gisele Red Phlox, Tsavo Compact Yellow Sanvitalia.

@npub13rw…dpzj Several years ago my mother wanted me to setup her Comcast DVR/cable box to turn off when she wasn't using it. It ended up not being at all practical since whenever it was turned on it would have to reinitialize with Comcast and re-download all the channels and program guides. That whole process took anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple hours EVERY time it was turned on! Now she has cut the cord on cable, so I guess that solved the issue.

There is a large, flat area in the Ball display garden that is filled with large rectangular test beds. These are often filled with multiple varieties of a single type of annual. Others are multiple types, but one color or annuals they feel grow well together. In past years, some have been AAS test beds, but I didn't notice if any were used for that this year. (AAS=All Americans Selections)

The Ball display gardens are mostly about decorative annuals, but there is a small section featuring their burpee veggies and herbs. It mostly shows their latest tomato varieties and compact peppers for containers.

This planter is interesting. All the flowers around the lower tier are different types of rudbeckia. The top of the planter has the tall pink plumes (see alt text for details). It was very eye catching!

These are 2 displays of the Jurassic series begonias at the Ball garden. Although they do bloom, it's rather insignificant and they are usually used for the foliage. The deep purples and reds are pretty impressive.

@npub1pur…z24k I probably should also say that the Ball display and test gardens are in zone 5. Although most of the plantings highlight their annuals, there are also some perennial areas. Some plants that we treat as annuals here are perennials in milder climates. #GardensOfBall

We often have coleus in our containers on the patio, but have never really thought about using it as a bedding plant. It seems very happy here in the shade under a tree.
Although nothing is actually "blooming" here, the color is still fantastic.

Just visited the amazing "Gardens of Ball". These are display & test gardens at Ball Horticulture's headquarters in the Chicago suburbs. They are not open to the public, but Ball allows local gardening groups to visit on weekdays in August by appt.

@npub1gwy…85lz @npub1pur…z24k Not necessarily 'correct', but we don't cut ours back in the fall (zone 5). In the spring, any dead wood that didn't survive the winter gets pruned then. The Annabelle hydrangeas get pruned to about 12" tall in the early spring. That's it. They are pretty low maintenance 🙂

One of the things I love about hydrangeas is how long the blooms add interest in the garden. All of our varieties initially bloom white and usually stay that way for at least a few weeks. Then they "fade" to their other colors. The Annabelle hydrangeas are currently green, while some of the oak leaf hydrangeas have become a creamy light green or pink. Many of them will be golden brown in the fall.

@npub13rw…dpzj I've seen that happen using LastPass. Sometimes it defaults to "launch" when you click on the entry you want rather than the normal "fill". Other than that, I haven't seen this behavior with chrome.

The containers are (he has 2, only 1 pictured) stock feeders that he drilled a few holes in the bottom. He's been using them for a couple of years and always gets a ton of #tomatoes.

After a couple of days of rain (which we really needed), the sun is out today and I was able to get back out to visit our garden. There are a ton of daylilies blooming. I've probably posted some of these before, but these are ALL the ones blooming today. There are another 4 or 5 that are not blooming today - they are either finished or haven't started yet or just taking a day off.

@npub1pav…4qst I can't speak for others but I get a blank screen for mas.to in chrome on Android (pixel 6) but it is fine on a Windows 10 desktop in chrome.
