I love hiking and have just completed my first long distance walk. Sadly work and family commitments mean I can't go out hiking as much as I'd like. Sometimes my pug will join me on some of my hikes, but he can't walk too long or he has to be carried.

Other interests include travelling, reading, crocheting, watching Kdramas and learning Korean.

Uni open days in the Netherlands for my oldest son. He wants to get into art uni. He showed his portfolio at the portfolio consultation at the uni yesterday and the teacher who was running the session was very impressed. Said son showed real potential and was impressed he was able to explain why he made certain pieces. Of course, as his mom I already knew he was talented, but because I’m his mom he never believed my praise. Needless to say he was happy and full of confidence after his consultation 😁

I never thought I would say this, but I miss sleeping in a tent. I wonder if I should plan a little weekend trip sometime soon.

I really want to do a longer solo hike. I’ve done one that was just two days and an overnight stay but would love to do a 3-4 day one. I found a nice route in the Netherlands which would be cool to explore, especially as it will be nice and flat, but it would really be better to find one in the UK so I’m not adding so much travel to the trip. Will have to look into it. It won’t be until October anyway considering everything else I’ve got on.

In preparation for my 2 week hike in areas with very little signal I’m unsubscribing from a lot of emails as I don’t fancy coming back to 1000s of emails. I get way too many nonsense emails anyway so this is a good excuse to cleanse my inbox.

Can someone recommend me trekking poles that are lightweight but don’t break the bank? I have a very cheap pair which is horrendous to adjust as you have to twist the pole which is difficult to do with sweaty hands. Plus while the pole is light, the handles are quite heavy.

My son’s art got featured in an exhibition and I’m so proud of him! He just turned 18 and is considering his uni options but whatever it will be will definitely feature art.

Read this book in two days, it’s so good! I really love the amount of research and the prominent inclusion of the Sherpa climbers in it. I have no desire to climb mountains like that, but it’s fascinating to read about.

My training has definitely paid off as my backpack this weekend felt super light. Mind you, we didn’t bring our tents this time so that saved almost 2kg.
The food we brought was heavier than our last walk as we took military rations rather than the freeze dried stuff, but it tasted SO much better, I may just accept the extra weight for tastier food.

This morning’s walk was gorgeous. We climbed about 300 metres at the start of our walk and then we had amazing views for the next couple of hours. We made it back to Bath just in time before the heavy rain arrived. All in all a very lovely weekend.

During my past two thru-hikes I feel like I was still focused too much on the destination rather than the journey itself. Part of that was because I wasn’t used to walking with a pack yet so I worried too much whether I’d be able to make the destination for that particular night. I really hope that my training makes it easier for me to enjoy the journey when we do the Hebridean Way as I want to appreciate the beauty of the Outer Hebrides.

I decided to get the full Ordnance Survey Maps app before my last big hike and it was such a game changer. I love the detail on those maps (and it doesn’t hurt that you can download it for offline use). They are just for the UK though, which is too bad, but certainly better to navigate with than Komoot when you’re away from clearly defined paths.

It’s almost like all the trees have grown their leaves overnight. The world looks a lot greener than it did yesterday. I love walking through the trees on my favourite dog walking path.

I’m suspending my weight training for the week as I’m going on a two day hike with my pack this weekend and I don’t want to tire myself out needlessly beforehand. So instead of walking to the train station this morning, I’ll cycle there with a non-weighted backpack.

Can someone tell me why it would be better to keep your tent inside your backpack while hiking rather than strapping it to the top? I bought backpacks for my son and me which are big enough to allow us to carry the tent inside the pack (and I fully intend to do so) but my son wants to strap his to the top or bottom. I don’t care what he does with his stuff unless it’s going to make life difficult for him so if there is a compelling reason to keep the tent inside the pack, I’m all ears!
