Protocol is in early draft, looks like. I also do like the approach wrt simplicity. All devs are on fedi too. Pinging @npub1zd3…ujj7 nice work!
It would be lovely if there'd be some unification of efforts to create an AP adjacent or compatible protocol.

oh, it is not that you can't get valuable human communication out of interacting this way. But you also pick up a lot of side-effects along the way (like dealing with said toxic persons).
There are cases where this type of comms is useful. I advocated fedi AS/AP for years (and now still do that, albeit with a different approach). So a larger audience helps there.
My account is less useful for different, more intimate kinds of interactions. Microblogging isn't that universal hammer :)

I agree. My own account has a number of followers that is also quite large. Though most are 'lurkers' that may filter out some interesting bits I say now and then 😅
When it comes to practical social networking as we are used to offline, for instance, so many followers is weird. Every msg I send is indeed like shouting it on a public square. And then have back and forth with random strangers shouting back.
Creating analogies to offline situations I find helpful to see useful patterns.

Take Github as example. Some people get mad about stars and following and say "remove the social networking cruft".
But even if you do, unless you develop software completely alone without taking input from others, Github is a social networking platform. Someone files an issue in your tracker --> social networking exchange. PR? Ditto.
Just one example. Social networking is EVERYWHERE.
So agree very much with your meme. Huge potential, we can do much more than we *currently* imagine.

yes, for me certainly as well. I find it very weird how tech focus and an imho kind of dogmatic bias limits this perspective of social networking to sending tweets, toots, bongs, or bangs to each other. 😄

Yea. I don't think anyone's understanding is wrong. Just that there's no clear definition. What the Fediverse is, is in the eye of the beholder.
As Fediverse gets more popular and well-known the various meanings of the word in different contexts will probably get a bit clearer, but always still in part subjective I guess. It is just too broad of a concept to be exactly fingerpointed a This Thing™

That can be a practical way to look at it. None of the opinions are wrong imho. Using that perspective focuses on where most efforts are to increase the general interoperability between different apps. Much needed.
It is a technical perspective, however. The social perspective of people getting connected needs no protocol definition.
The other day someone called me out to not use the term "Web" because its tied too much to HTTP. But not for the average person.

There is nothing "official" when it comes to what is part of the Fediverse and what is not. There are only opinions here. Sometimes quite strongly expressed.
I guess the Fediverse itself is an abstract concept. There's not really a well-defined notion of being "connected to the Fediverse".
When saying that there's often an implied "is it microblogging compliant" or "does it federate with Mastodon". There are AP apps wholly uncompliant to that, though.

Delightful 💕 to see that #EuropeanCommission now has an official #Mastodon instance. #EC loves Mastodon, as the image clearly shows.
I hope this love will expand further to not just extend to one #FreeSoftware microblogging application, but to become a full embrace of the #OpenStandards based decentralized #SocialNetworking environment and #SocialWeb technology ecosystems that have formed around its open protocols, such as #ActivityPub.

Saddening me time and again is seeing individualism and fragmentation in #FOSS.
#Collaboration between projects that's so often low-hanging fruit, yet never happens. More anticipation of needs, helping each other, be stronger together. Yet it hardly shapes up to the extent that it could.
We seem to lack time to become sustainable, let alone 'win' from #Hypercapitalism. No time to seek collab as we prod on alone.
There are exceptions of course, and better collab tools are becoming available.

I like the title. Though I consider "autonomous" be a tease and small barb towards traditional corporate non-social Social Media.
"Autonomous" is like automated, robotic in the visual image I get when hearing the title. But that's the fun there. Fedi is about autonomous people doing the things they love, and on their own free volition. No algorithmic steering and influencing there. So the exact opposite of that mental picture.
You could make that a theme in the presentation visuals.

there used to be a full-blown (non-federated) remake of Stackoverflow in a GH project. Firing it up would give nearly the same UI and a whole bunch of the gamification features.
I was only mildly interested at the time, and did not star or anything. Later on, seeing "federated SO" thread for the N-th time I tried to find it again on multiple occasions. No luck, unfortunately.
Such project would be a great basis to add #ActivityPub to.
